  • Duty Free Buying

I’ve never bought cigars through duty free as either I had my family with me or I’ve not travelled in recent years.
Going to Spain later this year from East Midlands to Malaga.
So for a complete novice where can you / should you buy?
East Midlands duty free and then carry them around till you come back through customs? Or Malaga duty free?

I’ll have to be sneaky as I don’t want the kids to find out.

I always thought buying on the way back but went to Eurodisney last year and there were no duty free on the Eurostar on the way home.

    confused

Really tough question to answer. Airport duty free can have some really cracking deals (location depending) but stock has been pretty poor the last few years.

A lot of countries generally have cheaper tobacco prices - Spain especially. I think a lot of people here would probably shop around in the country itself and stomach the slightly higher price for the potential of better stock options. UK duty free isn't great.

Best of both worlds? Pick up some stock in the country, things you really want, save some space for the return journey and if you see something good in duty free you can get it too

You won’t find much in UK duty free, just go hunting in Spain. Google is your best friend.

Don't know about Malaga but found a great Estanco in Granada recently with good stock of both CC's and NC's. There was nothing at all in either Gatwick or Seville duty free.

Where abouts in Malaga are you going?

If you're near the Malaga Metro line you could take a trip to Torremolinos and Fuengirola (I haven't been into Malaga).
Haven't been out that way since Covid myself but used to go a few times a year.
There's a really good Tabac in Torremolinos, very close to the metro station, in the square. There is another one about 5 minutes walk but wasn't as good.
In Fuengirola there were 2/3 really good Tabacs, one Camino del Coin I think it was, and another near the port, right next to a church. Always had good stock of Cubans though that was when they were more reasonably priced.

If you were a bit more rural you could always hire a car and take a trip to Gibraltar? Car rental hire used to be dirt cheap and there's parking at the marina, you just walk along to the border, cross into Gibraltar and get the bus on the other side.

            We’re actually going to Nerja.
No possibility of taking cigar trips whilst on holiday unless in Nerja or at Duty Free in Malaga or East Midlands.

              Thread resurrection.
Here in Nerja. 3 shops, 1 has no cigars at all, 1 has a few of the really bottom end and then Cohiba the final has a few boxes (mainly the small cigars) many cheap stuff and then Cohiba.
Theyre all hidden in a couple of cabinets so you can’t really see what they have in boxes.
I was rather hoping I could get some robusto size rather than small sticks and waste my 50 allowance.

Sad times indeed, I started smoking Cuban's because of Spanish holidays & the fact they were at least 30-50% cheaper than in the UK.

Prices of P4 in Barcelona the other week was €35 per stick & €75 for a Cohiba, no idea which was as it wasn’t labelled but smaller than Robusto. Prices do not appear to be cheaper abroad now & interestingly there was also not much difference in pricing of Plasencia in Mallorca compared to UK price.
Then you have the issue that when abroad & they realise your a tourist, you can’t buy them as their for the locals, even R&J Mille Fleurs
