  • Düsseldorf trip

The mrs is wanting to go to Düsseldorf for the Christmas market, I agreed as I see it as a good opportunity to build my stash up.

Am I best off purchasing from duty free or from
    a local shop?

I don’t know specifically about Germany.. but from Swiss experiences the local/mail order shops are the way to go.

I’ve always been disappointed by duty free shops.

Yeah. Local shops. Get the paperwork to reclaim tax.

I’ve just had a quick google on claiming back German 19% tax if outside EU, haven’t dived right in but it seems it may be as easy as asking at the till when you purchase?

I *think* you have to get a receipt/form and claim at the airport.

Yep you can claim your VAT back from Europe, you need to get a form from the retailer and remember to keep within the legal limits for cigars.

I was here in the Summer for a Depeche mode gig.

The LCDH did have Cubans but I was restricted to x2 of the same stick. I got about x20 sticks incl. Partagas, Upmann, HdeM, Cuaba and Bolivar. They had a nice lounge but I didn’t use it. They kept my sticks for me in their humi and I colllected on the day I went home. Make sure you try the guys home made Vodka it’s lovely

The Davidoff store (28/30 Konigsallee) was well stocked with new worlds and Davidoff cigars + the usual Cohiba / Trinidad’s and the guy was super friendly. I got a box of x25 Grand Crus (these are on par with any Cuban I smoke) and smoked a couple upstairs in the smoking area.

CigarWorld I didn’t have time to go to.

Don't bother with the Bar & Cigar Lounge at the Breidenbacher Hotel. I tried to go here twice and got turned away twice, seams to be “if your face fits” place. I did email them after and they replied inviting me again but I wouldn’t go out of stubbornness.

Even on Cigars ? Wish I bloody knew this.

There is a small FX hub you go to at DUS airport, they will probably send you you to the Customs area (directly opposite) so go here first to avoid queueng twice.

We bought something from Tiffany and had to ask for a Tax Free receipt as they had to stamp it for the refund work.

Trying to claim back the 19% is a right chew...everytime I've tried I haven't had the correct paperwork or turned up to the airport without enough time.

Breidenbacher Hotel has great cocktails and lounge. Ive been a number of times and never had a problem

Selected Cigars just off Koningsallee had a very limited supply and small lounge, no beer

Cigarworld has a huge lounge.....loads of NC, hardly any cubans. Help yourself honesty setup of beer, wine, coffee, spirts. They give you a card to count your cigars and drinks....great place. Friendly guys if you behave correctly!

I've never managed to get that to work. I've asked in Germany and Spain and no one seems to know what I'm talking about. Has anybody ever managed to get the tax back in this fashion?

It 100% works as we did it recently.

Retail stores normally have a sticker in the window advertising it, the main ones are Premier Tax Free and Global Blue.

You need to ask for a “tax refund form” and the retailer will ask for a copy of your passport (to validate ID) and fill the form in with you and stamp it.

Then when you get to the airport you must go to the Tax Free Refund counter (sometimes they’re combined with l the currency exchange counter) and they will process your form and give you the refund (less a handling fee). Refund is either card or cash.

Give yourself some time at the airport as a lot of people from the far-east use this to save on luxury brands and the counters can be very busy.

We did it recently in Dublin but you downloaded an app, grabbed a Tax Free card (like a Tesco Clubcard) from one the shops and then swiped it whenever we bought stuff. The you applied for the refund on the app without the hassle at the airport.

I just noticed that France, Belgium don’t allow it on tobacco. I’m looking at the Global Blue Tax site.

Also - sorry I might have my wires crossed but If you claim back the tax (when leaving the EU) should you not be paying VAT/Import when you bring it into the UK?
