  • Simon Bolivar's Cruise Saga

So whilst the Cruise quiz was going on, our cruise was in jeopardy, as we were supposed to join in Shanghai, which is currently in lock down. I expected MSC to cancel & started planning a 2/52 trip to Havana instead, which would catch the Cigar Festival & hoped to meet up with some mates from around the world. Not at the festival of course but at other venues in town.

This evening my plans have been shattered. MSC have made arrangements to start the cruise in Singapore instead. For those who booked direct with MSC, they have no worries & MSC will re-book their flights. For those of us who saved a heck of a lot of money & booked through an agency, have to contact them & hope they'll come to some arrangement. No if they get the money back from the flight to Shanghai, they should spend that on a flights to Singapore & if there's a difference, then I'd expect to cover it. But I wonder if it will be that simple? We can't cancel, as the cruise hasn't been cancelled we would lose all that money. I guess if the worst comes to the worst we cancel with the agency if they say booking new flights will cost us more than we can get on the internet. Tonight I have found Qantas non-stop for ?550. We have independent travel insurance but can't see them paying out for a cruise that's not cancelled or for a change in flights?

    Any ideas?

'customers who booked an outbound flight ticket to Asia, but not through MSC Cruises, will need to contact their airline or travel agent for a refund or possible re-protection to Singapore.

MSC Splendida will dock in Singapore on Thursday 13 February and guests can board the ship from
1800pm Singapore time onwards. The ship will depart from Singapore on Friday 14 February at 2300pm Singapore time.@

Simon, might you have some recourse as the cruise you have paid for and expected is now not the cruise you're getting? Claim that Shanghai was one of the places you were most looking forward to?

Did you book on a credit card? Ie visa MasterCard or Amex. Not Visa Debit

If so your contract is with the credit card company and you can most probably get most if not all of your money back from the credit card company.

I think what the lads are saying makes sense.
Get your CC company involved saying the product you've purchased is not the product you're receiving. You shouldn't be out of pocket. Your insurance company should also be helping

I can?t see anyone paying for the extra flights no so if you want to go still you?re probably having to shell out. Don?t go and complain to your credit card company and they should refund it though

I agree with Horsebox. MSC Is not providing what they promised, I find they should be held responsible.

Surely flights you booked to Shanghai should be refunded whoever you booked with due to the lock down. The options then are refund customers or offer an alternative flight destination which is what you want.

Good morning Gents. Thanks for the advice given above; Kickback, that's our logic. The Agency we booked through are responsible not MSC, as it was several thousand cheaper not to book direct. I emailed the agency last night & they have just replied that would call to discuss our new flight arrangements so fingers crossed things will work out, I'll keep you updated.

Update: We'll you'll never guess what happened! Received an answer to my email, asking me to call ref change of flights. Called up & was offered Flights to Singapore, with Emirates & return from Dubai, they sent me an email with the flights & I then had to confirm that I accepted the new arrangements. He did mention 'Force Majore' & how this was costing the company extra money & I was expecting the worst but before agreeing I had to confirm, 'I trust there are no extra charges for us?'

He replied 'No', as we booked the cruise as a package they were liable, they had applied for cancellations for the original flights & would cover the extra cost. He did ask sweetly if we could give a positive feedback on Trip Adviser & frankly once they have safely got us there & back, I will be happy to do so. Added bonus we can now take 30kg hold luggage instead of 23kg so I can pack an extra jacket & pr of shoes. Looks like I'll be smoking a fine vintage Havana in Ho Chi Minh City after all, I certainly wasn't expecting that a couple of weeks ago!

That?s great news, by the way the locals still call it Saigon. Was there last year. If you have time go to the tunnels and the killing fields memorial. Then cheer yourself up by sitting on the banks of the Mekong with a good cigar watching the hustle and bustle of the city go by.

Excellent news. Plus echo the comments on visiting the tunnels and the "Museum of American Warcrimes".

This pisses me off with businesses. Such events are a cost of business. It's part of how they are able to offer their deals. Part of the whole risk profile of running a business. And so when they look after their customers it's a miracle and they have gone beyond the call of duty and deserve praise!?

Extremely rare risks like this are not factored in to business operating models. If they were the prices would go up to customers and the business would lose market share to their competitors who don't factor the risk on their costs.
Who knew this was likely to happen months ago?
