I looked on Amazon.com for one of the TSA approved safety cases that TJ mentioned but couldn't find anything

And thats how it works in reality too. Last year in Canada I was hauled off into a room and had a small magnesium rod taken out of my hold luggage because they can make sparks if it scraped against one of the knives in my case.

The fact the knives, axe and machete were in clipped leather sheathes seemingly made no odds.

The knives and numerous lighters weren't seemingly an issue and they never even checked if the alcohol stove had been emptied.

I had this issue before going out on my honeymoon earlier this year so bought a cigar traveller lighter - they fluid res bit is like a normal soft flame lighter and can be taken out the unit so you can travel with that in your pocket and the other section in your luggage and shouldn't get stopped.

Mine has never missed a beat and is a great lighter for at home and doubles up as a table lighter as well.

None of this makes any sense. When they introduced the ban on liquids I read somewhere that you can't just poor two liquids together and get an explosive, you need to constantly cool and stir for a few hours to produce anything of danger. So essentially, you just have to prevent people from locking themselves into a toilet for more than 30 min. I talked to an ex army guy a few years ago. He now worked for an explosives company and I asked him about this. He confirmed the article.

So all this BS at the airport is only there for one reason, to make people feel like the government is 'doing something about terrorists'. It's just that, nothing else. To thwart a thread that's lower than slipping in your bathroom and killing yourself...

How much "burn time" do you get out of one if it's fully filled? They are refillable?

They are refillable and they last quite a while, certainly longer than my triple jet!

Thanks. I ordered a few and will give them a go. I am trying to solve my disappearig lighter problem. It's easy to fly out from Heathrow with a jet lighter, but I always seem to loose them at the airports coming back [emoji57]

I noticed at the British Airways check in yesterday that the notice said no lighters in checked in or cabin baggage. The picture was of a traditional Zippo and I didn’t have one of those in my bag!

Not yet and I put two cheap jets in my checked in case. In June I took a metal Zippo with Thunderbird insert in my checked in case. I don’t carry one in my cabin bag.

Smoking materials

Cigarettes and other tobacco products are all allowed in hand baggage.
You can carry one lighter only on board the aircraft, which must be kept on your person throughout the flight. You will be asked to leave any additional lighters at the security point, so please make sure you only carry one on your trip.

Both lighters and e-cigarettes must be included within the liquid allowance and placed inside the one litre plastic bag for screening. Once the one litre bag has been screened, the lighter/e-cigarette must be removed from the plastic bag and carried on your person.

Please note the e-cigarettes are banned completely from hold luggage.
Matches and lighters are not allowed in hand or checked in baggage. You may take a single butane lighter or a box of safety matches on board the aircraft but only if carried on your person. Zippo lighters are also allowed as your one lighter.
