When you go in the local cigar shops they might let you check the boxes. Always worth a rummage to see if they have some aged stock.

Well I bought a R&J short churchills today and opened it up when I got back to hotel and it had signs of mild over it.

Good man. Exactly what I was going to suggest. Unless it's green mould, you're good to go. I'm assuming what was on there was white? This is called plume/bloom in the cigar world. Some people go mad for sticks with plume/bloom on them. It's supposed to indicate a well aged stick. Quite a polarising topic!
