• Best place to day trip? Is it worth it?

Hi all
Ive been to gib before and picked up some great stuff at stagnettos. Unfortunately getting there and back in a day works out quite expensive with the best prices I can find at about 150 quid.

Ive never been to switzerland but i see it is actually really cheap to go to geneva and back same day. I've seen returns for about ?40 which sort of makes it feasable to go and spend 6 to 8 hours there and pick up 50 sticks. Anybody done this recently or have any tips?

Cheers

I guess it depends on how much you intend to save, is it better to spend more on flights but bring back 200+ sticks or get cheaper flights and only bring back 50?

7kingsguy I went to Geneva in May and it was well worth it. I highly recommend Gesto cigar shop. It has a wonderful selection of Cuban and new world cigars and some fabulous aged gems can be found there. The staff (ask for Jo) are very friendly and welcoming too. The city is very beautiful as well, although a bit expensive (about ?8 a pint). You can get a 7am flight from Luton and return at 9pm. The airport is not too far from the city centre. You could easily do your cigar shopping and a bit of sight seeing (I'd recommend the Lake Geneva boat trip- 2 hours around the lake with a meal for about ?45, you can take your own cigar to smoke onboard! ) and be back in London with 50 fantastic aged sticks by midnight. Definitely worth it!

I live in Switzerland and don't think the prices are great for cigars. Wouldn't Spain be a better option for a day trip?

Geneva prices use to be very good, sadly not so much these days with the pound taking a beating just about everywhere.

Looking at the prices online i think swiss is going to be cheaper than spain. Are the gesto online prices not the same as in the shop?

Apologies. A better way to word that would be... are the shop prices better in spain or switzerland.

Spanish prices are fixed across all Spanish territory (unless you find a scumbag upping his prices) and can be found online, although I can?t find the link right now.

Paris is another possibility for a day trip. I paid about ?60 return from Gatwick to CdG leaving around 8.30 and returning about 12 hours later. Add another ?20 ish for a day train ticket and you can fit in a bit of sightseeing too.

Also going over to Bruges on the Eurotunnel and a day return is again around ?60 and taking the car means you can bring back some drinks too.

Belgium & France are reachable on a day ticket but you'll have to spend a lot to recoup the cost of the travel. Take it as a day out you would take anyway & buying some slightly cheaper cigars then UK, Day trip to Geneva would be my choice & bringing back the legal amount of high end cigars you'd certainly behead (depending how far Sterling continues to fall). Best still take the wife/ significant other & you can make the trip more worthwhile & she can bring back 50 too, plus spirits & she gets the day out & all is well in the world!
