  • Dominican Republic Cigar shopping

Whats the low down on getting cigars in the Dominican Republic as I am trying to sell my other half on the idea of going for holiday later in the year. I am open to local DR sticks as well as Cuban, I did notice a humidor in one of the hotel resorts but I am guessing it's more expensive! Are there reputable stores that I could look out for that are official outlets?

Most resorts have cigar shops where the prices are way better than here but slightly dearer than the USA. The most expensive place I found was the airport but still cheaper than here. Like Cuba, don't buy anywhere but in the shops or factories.

Don't expect any bargins, I didn't buy anything in DR, same as Belgium - some items dearer! I'd be wary of Cubans there but mostly it was the price that put me off int he official shops. Obviously, as PJ said, don't buy anywhere else. And smoke at the beach, you can expect to get pestered by those selling fakes. If you're prepared to pay to go all the way to the DR, just go to Cuba! Plenty for the wife to see & do & you'll sure enjoy it more as well.

But the food is way better in the DR which is why we're going back in November.

Can't argue with that PJ, I really enjoyed the DR, more than I thought I would but if you're going to buy cheaper Havanas then there's no debate. Against Cuba, is that everything oyu find will be 2016/17 & the lack of stock available in the shops. Don't go setting your heart on one or two items, go with an open mind & buy the best you find.

I did actually look at Cuba first but from my research I am not convinced we would rate the quality of food available there even in the big hotels & have heard the same thing from people that have been. It may have to be cruise port destination for us were I can make my purchases and get back onto the cruise ship were I can eat fillet stake every night [emoji4]As the Dominican is used to higher levels of tourism you would think the organisation and access to imported goods the quality should be a bit higher. If I can get a decent Dominican stick for $10 I would be quiet happy. On a side note I am actually in Brugge next month were I thought I could get a bargain!
