  • Jaunt to Amsterdam

Following Tom Major's really interesting travel piece about riding to a beach and having a cigar. I thought maybe a little travel monologue here might be interesting. Where the travel is the thing, rather than the "what price was stick X and airport Y". Those threads are incredibly useful, don't get me wrong. I'm not denigrating them in the slightest, but if any of my fellow BOTL here have read anything of mine, they know I'm partial to a rambling discourse.

So. Theoretically I was going to Amsterdam with a friend, we were going to see some the recently reopened Rijksmuseum and the van Gogh Museum. I also figured it would be a good way to bring back a hundred cigars. Obviously!

As it turns out, I'm on my sweeney now, which allows me freedom to potter about, but will curtail purchasing by 50%. Oh well. On the positive side, it has forced a change of accommodation to a place round the corner from both the aforementioned van Gogh Museum, and the Conservatorium Hotel, which has the LCDH of Amsterdam in it. I fully intend to traipse out to PGC's as well, but if I don't get that far, then its an excuse for a return visit, surely.

I have been spending a lot of time mentally filling my duty-free allotment. Do I get continental only editions, do I stock up on cheaper go-to sticks that are more expensive here (no criticism of our benefactor sponsors, its tax after all). Or do I mix and match, or even look for some new things to try. I got just get myself fifty JLP Cazadores and have reasonable CCs for next year (after their mandatory resting), but that would be a bit boring.

    So I am thinking:

Raphael Gonzalez Panatella Extras, which seem to be a non-UK thing, and if they're good like the Perlas, I'm game to get a handful.
Trinidad Reyes - for my sins I've never tried one. Hardly anyone seems to dislike them, so I should give at least one a whirl.
    H. Upmann Magnums. I like their half coronas and a few of their smaller vitolas, so maybe time to try a big boy.
Hoyo de Monterrey. I love a short robusto, but the epicures are even nicer, so maybe some of those.
JLP somethings, because some half decent go-to sticks for less than perfect cigar situations would be nice.
Partagas D-somethings. I'm thinking 5s or even 6s as shorter smokes.
Quinteros - never tried one, I've read pretty good things, so maybe a few to try.
Vegueros - I'm a fan of both the Mananitas and the Entretiempos, so maybe a 4-pack of each?

    Decisions Decisions.

Of course, my budget isn't infinite, but I did make the mistake of (if you look in the Today's smoke thread) of making a pilgramage to Turmaeus in Shepherd Market, as my train to the continent isn't until tomorrow. And you can't just go in and come out empty handed, it would be just an insult to the senses. So I got myself a Monte Media Corona to "sample" there - thank you to the nice fellow working there this afternoon. It felt brilliant descending the tiny spiral staircase and being able to light up inside.

I also got some "travelling" smokes, not that I'll be able to smoke on the train or anything, but there's the walk to the station, the walk from the station, that kind of thing. I settled on a Arturo Fuente Short Story (as I've always wanted to try one), and a HdM Epicure No.2 because why not. And a box of Toscanellos, because they're really decent odd little things.

The expert fellow there couldn't help me and had no experience of my very strange salty JLP Petit Cetros from a few weeks ago (it was really weird), so I'm chalking that up to "because Cuba".

    Picture to follow...

      Have smokes, will travel:

Not sure where exactly they're going to get smoked yet, but they will be!

Also, in the sampling room at Turmeaus in Mayfair (which I found partly by remembering my Patrick O'Brian!):

Please forgive me as I know it's not the aim of the thread, but it would be interesting if you could shed some light on the prices, especially in the Airport...

Alas I shall not be able to help with schipol airport, I'm going by train, but I'll do my best for a price list at LCDH and PGC if I'm feeling motivated to get there :-)

My research seems to show that prices in the city of Amsterdam are pegged or at least very similar and it's a matter of available sticks more than anything else. We shall see!

you do know that there is no limit of cigars you can bring back within the EU as long as you can prove they are for personal use (god know what will happen when we leave but for now fill your boots

I heard they start asking questions around the 400 mark

Check in with Didi Festen at the LCDH there and he'll keep you right.

Personally I'd stick to 200max but I am a cautious guy. I can also show pic's of my collection so give credence that I am actually buying them to add to my collection rather than re-selling them. You were planning on a 100 & you won't have any problems with that amount & if you can afford it I would certainly take that many & get he max out of your visit.

RG PX are very good, cheapest Havana worth smoking IMHO, they are a medium length pantela, 5" x36, so not like the perla 4"x40. Here's my current box of the PX. NB they are short filler hand finished cigars, the Perlas are long filler hand made.RG.PanX.2015.02.23.SAM_6426.1.jpgRG.PanX.2013.12.17.SAM_4026.1.jpgRG.PanX.2012.04.26.SAM_3591.1.jpg

Thank you all for the very positive starting notes. Maybe I will try for a hundred. I don't have a picture of my stash/collection, but surely the assorted lighters, cutters, bands dotted in many various pockets might help in a pinch.

Thank you also Se?or Bolivar for the pictures of the RG PX, you had suggested them in my newbie greet thread and I'm raring to try one. I have no particular issue with them being short fill and hand finished but they taste good abd stay together.

This morning's little smoke will be a Monte club between hotel and St. Pancreas. The excitement builds

                            An Update!

Today I smoked a Dutch Half Corona whilst meandering to the Rijksmuseum, and then, after an extended mooch, I walked down the way to LCDH in the Conservatorium. It turns out Didi isn't in until Wednesday, but name dropping had a positive effect and I had a good chat with the fellow running the joint.

The entire casa, in case you haven't visited is one massive humidor, with open boxes and small packs to one side and a wall of boxes and cabinets (complete with ladder on a rail) on the other. I didn't take photos, but as I'll probably be buying on Wednesday, I'll ask then.

To sate my hunger for a smoke, and it being a nice day and all, I picked a Por Laranaga PC for my wander back (my first in maybe a year). Photo to follow as its on my phone. The dude cut it with the most amazing device that looked like a staple gun had married a cigar cutter and had the most usefully engineered stainless steel baby. I've no idea where to get one, but I do know I think I want one!

I took a gentle walk to a canal and sat and herfed for a good forty minutes, and I think, all things considered, I might not like PLPCs. I found it a bit one dimensional, which seems counter to what I've read as a general consensus here. Maybe I got a bad one, though in all respects it was a well constructed stick, carefully selected from a cab by an expert. I did find it burnt a little unevenly and required a few touch ups. Despite purging when doing so and ashing, no sudden "ooh the good bit" occurred for me. You live and learn though. Not everyone will like everything.

The experience though was excellent. Not least walking into a place devoted to servicing the hobby of the BOTL and SOTL, but just how friendly people are in these places. Like its a secret hobby, and you've discovered a special place. I like that aspect. And I liked the experience of smoking the stick, even if it was not entirely to my taste. And as I've said before, all the little meta-effects go a long way to making a smoke a great experience.

For those keeping note, I couldn't get a price list (another job for Wednesday, or maybe even tomorrow if I can't help myself), but I can tell you a PLPC (and a box of matches!) was E6.30 (which in my head equates to a fiver), so I don't feel remotely put out.

                            The adventure continues.

                              Today's PLPC:

As aforementioned, maybe my tastes have changed since the last I had, maybe it was an off stick (though doubtful), but I count it as a glorious learning experience and excuse to try something else tomorrow
