    Gents,

I'm heading away in a few days and just realised that I've never flown with my travel humidor which contains two 60gm Boveda packs.
Do you put your travel humidor in your carry on or checked bags? I'm thinking about the temperature in the cargo bay being that little bit colder than the passenger part of the cabin but not sure if the customs/security people are happy to let the Boveda packs through in carry on?

Your help and advice is appreciated, as usual.

    Many thanks,
    Alex

I carry on. If I'm only away for a few days, I don't use any humidification as those travel humis are well sealed (or should be)

If you're concerned about the Boveda, just pop them in the clear bag whilst going through customs.

I use a 15ct Xikar travel humi, with a single large boveda, I've put it in both hand and hold luggage and never had a problem with either.

No one has ever stopped my boveda, but as CJ said, make sure you got space in your plastic bag for it and it should be fine.

I have had a spate of losing cutters and lighters though!

Get some torjet lighters (about 4 for ?5 off amazon/eBay) and get a couple of cheap cutters. Put them in your hold luggage if you have it. If not, just risk losing them.

boveda through customs just fine 2 weeks ago... without thinking!

i went back to basics and took cigar matches in hand luggage... reminded me that a decent jet flame makes life so much easier!!!!

It depends how long I'm going, but generally I take it on with my hand luggage and have a boveda in, I've never even thought it could be a problem and am not sure why it would be

I never bring any matches or lighters though, you can pick a butane jet for next to nothing generally so I just don't see the point of risking it. There was a new lighter call the Cigar Traveller, which can be dismantled - I'm not convinced how useful it is, or in fact whether they can legally be brought onto a plane, but may be worth looking into

I also try to put any cutters/punches in the hold, but if I'm bringing it with hand luggage I wouldn't bring anything I would mind loosing

I bought the cigartraveler equivalent from Maplins and it's quite decent to use....was ?10 and use it all the time now but its too bulky to take out though. But on a holiday it's handy.

Regarding the cutter to be safe I keep it in checked luggage too....don't want to risk it being confiscated. Unless it's one of the cheap ones.

I think that's pretty sound advice, carry the Humi in the carry on bag and pop the Bovedas in the little plastic toiletry bag if necessary.
I'm quite keen on keeping my lighter though as I had problems getting a decent one before; not sure they have any grounds to take it.

I can understand the idea of putting the cutter in your carry on and was planning to do that with the new Xi2 (thanks to Shamz for the recommendation) but I can't see any grounds for them taking the lighter, which I was planning on bringing on my person, though it's only cheap so not the end of the world if it's taken.

You can only carry 1 lighter on board. You should put it inside a resealable plastic bag (like the ones used for liquids), which you must keep on you throughout the flight. You can?t:
                  • put it in your hold luggage
                  • put it in your hand luggage after screening"

They don't like jet lighters btw. Just in case you're precious about the lighter you have, if it's a jet, perhaps consider not taking it? It'd be a Bugger to have it confiscated by a 'jobs-worth' on the day.

As CJ says, they don't like Jet Lighters (which is generally what people use to light cigars), obviously it up to you but the fact is people have had lighters confiscated so are just giving fair warning not to take something you'd miss

I put my Xikar travel humidor in the hold luggage, brought some Siglo VI's and Especiales No. 2 back from Rome without any worries, they arrived fine provided you pack them correctly. I spent a good 20 mins working out which was the best way to pack them, shaking the humidor and testing them etc haha [emoji23]

Yes, I agree. I have a cheap one with me.

I decided to go with the carry on option and have space in the little plastic bag. Took cigars back from Cuba in a carry on which was no problem but didn't have a Boveda pack (was concerned they'd interpret it as liquid today).
In the Cuban example the cigars went straight into my friend's humidor but this time I'll be smoking throughout the few weeks so want them to be in good shape
