Just had a week out in the sun of Madeira. Sadly a number of years ago the LCDH closed as, I believe, it didnt get enough trade. While it is Ronaldo's home turf, it remains to be a reasonably modest island and the LCDH would i suspect have only ever have been there to serve the cruise ships.
so, whats left now for the travelling BOTL? If you have stick shopping in mind, not a whole heap if the truth be told. Funchal is littered with little Tabacharias (forgive my spelling) but these little kiosks appear to be predominantly a cigarettes, glossy mags & chewing gum affair.
In one of the little shopping malls, behind 'The Ritz' there is a tobacconist (opposite a little Spar) which had some NC sticks in tubos... Forgive me i couldnt get past a few old dodgers to examine too closely.
On the main drag, on the upper side of the cathedral, is a minimarket. It had a glass cabinet of boxes and tubos and a cabinet humi of various. There were 10 boxes of RyJ wide churchills, 3 packs of CORO's, smaller siglos, some tubos of D4, a box of P2 and a bunch of tubos from bolivar, cohiba, partagas, some and lots of vega finas. All were quite expensive. The ones in the glass case would probably be fine, its a humid island, but it wasnt a humi. The humi cabinet itself was smart and well kept.
At the airport the pickings were a little richer. The humi cabinet included, some behikes, cohibas of smaller siglos, p.edmundos, D4,d5, p2, chiados, behikes, short n wide churchills, some smaller RyJ in 25's, epicure 2 and the LCDH P.robustos 10 stick case. The airport prices would match any of the 'regular' european prices. Thee was a box of D5 from 2012 which was tempting, but i kep my wallet in my pocket in the end.
It's an outdoors island, because of its microclimate. There are lots of places; cafes, restaurants, parks, etc that seem to accept smokers as normal.... However, with so many British tourists of a certain age around there is a certain amount of distain for smoke when they are out in force. However, Vaping hasnt really found the island so there are plenty of folk having a smoke around and about.
its a beautiful island, and warm all year round, at all times of day; an ideal setting for enjoying good sticks, but i would advise taking your own as the local pickings are slender and pricey outside the aiport. Madeira wine makes a darn good accompaniment to a good smoke too, be it the stickier malvasia, or the fino like sercial, and those in between.
certainly a place in which you can relax and enjoy the setting, the stunning scenery and a decent smoke.... After all Churchill spent time their painting! But for buying its a baren landscape. Take your own.
