Deeply disappointed.... Had a few moments to spare as i visited so of my Y'shire based colleagues, so struck out to the only city centre tobacconist i could find on google.

the cigar selection looked well kept, good and varied; both CC and NC. the pipe tobaccos looked solid, not hugely extensive, but varied and interesting and they had a decent selection of pipes, accessories and general acoutrements.

given the sector has been so bashed by lack of advertising, it really only leaves service as a differentiator..... And my goodness you spot good service when you get it. So, this place which i am going to leave nameless, just seemed beaten/ defeated.

Sadly, the staff just seemed worn away by a long chain of surly customers buying cigarettes ( and e-cigarette top ups). The other customers while i was there barely uttered a please or thank you between them, if at all...

I really fancied picking up a few singles, and maybe a bit of pipe tobacco ( i love my flavoured pipe tobaccos), and buying some spare timber for my locknlock.... But my enquiry as to whether they had rhe latest copy of CA, was met with a vacant stare, and a confused suggestion that WH Smiths sells magazines...

I had been staring longingly into the walk-in humi, then at the loose tobaccos, and then eventually gave up wondering if someone might come to assist me and approached the counter to ask about CA. When it became clear she had no idea what I was after, there was no attempt to sell me anything or enquire further about my needs. The staff seemed to see me as an odd fella in a suit, i was really hoping to have found a little cigar pick up spot for my business travels, but was defeated at the first enquiry so turned on heal and left, wishing i hadnt bothered.

i'm all for supporting local businesses and putting cash through the hands and tills of someone you build a customer relationship with... But sadly this was a long way off. Hope i simply had a bad experience, and others have had a top end service here....

Please tell me if this was Greens. I have been thinking about driving over but I wont bother if this is what I can expect.

Think half the time they employ staff that haven't got a clue when it comes to tobacco and cigars etc
only there to serve customers buying weekly magazines ..daily papers..cigarettes.

I have to say the experience outside of London has generally left me underwhelmed to say the least, although I haven't tried the Newcastle or Scottish stores.

Let me guess, she had plenty of NC's on sale?

Such a shame. In an industry that's hardly at it's peak, it's silly to score an own goal like that.

These retailers have to understand that knowledge and service are the only things that will make us part with our cash in their store.

I'm guessing it was Greens - which is, tbh absolutely shite of the women are on duty. They know less than nothing about cigars / pipes / baccy.
                  HOWEVER
Paul, the owner, is awesome - unbelievably helpful and provides excellent service.
It's just a real shame it's a crap shoot whether he's in or not.

I didnt want to call them out by name directly as everyone deserves a second chance, and this was a one shot view of the store.

Glad to hear there is an upside... the variety of stock and the humi looked solid, and it couldnt be an accident!!

In the interests of fairness I couldn't possibly say! Have you been to the one there?

There is an awesome little shop in Penzance though, a couple run it together and love to chat to anyone. They ever have their own blend of cigars for the shop. I was chatting to them for nearly two hours, brill little store.

Yes - on the high street... We stay at the fistral bay over Christmas and last year I had an awful cold so didn't take any smokes... It then cleared up... We passed the shop so I nipped in.

Woman was very standoffish and when I inspected a punch coronation asked me if I knew what I was looking for, but not in a pleasant way. When I asked how they had been stored (the tubes were in a box on the counter) she said in tubes, they weren't meant to be stored any other way, I pivoted on my heel and left...

                          Will try Penzance!

So, i started with a whinge, and to add some balance or redress the karma!

Years ago a store down in Exeter delivered me some great service. I bought a Partagas humi with x2 boxes of sticks in it from them. I happened to get the owner on the blower and we talked and talked and he juggled the package and juggled the price and delivered it next day!! ... solid service that stuck with me...

most recently also had a positive experience in Stratford upon Avon... tiny cigar selection but cracking service.

                              The Penzance place is here:

They were a little downbeat with all the packaging laws coming in but they are a lovely couple and passionate about tobacco is an understatement, you could see they just loved everything about it.
