Is the LCDH Fincato the only 'go to' cigar store in the eternal city?

will be giving them a visit, but wondered if there is anywhere else worth a look see that any BOTL's would recommend?

    many thanks
    Matt

PM monkey66 as I think he's been there often and may be able to help. He doesn't seem to be on much, but it's worth a try

Found fincato.... Got a little haul building- the cigar man placed an order for delivery on thurs, see what lands!. MLW loved the shop and might even come away with a mini-lady pipe! Spied a few tabacs worth a rummage too!

Great city for strolling and smoking a decent stick.

Hey, cool Matt I hope you chanced your arm and asked if he could source any La Escepcions?

Was given a blank 'sold out' answer.... Hence the planned rummaging!

The LCDH Fincato is probably the best store, but there are about 3 other stores worth a try, I can't remember the locations sadly! one was near the government building on the corner of a square and one was near the river, sorry I can't be more help. The LDCH was the store I brought most of my cigars when I was last in Rome, 3 boxes of La Escepcions, two boxes where split with other BOTL and one I kept. If you can find them they are very good.

So some thoughts after a few days re-submerging myself into Roma, and sniffing out cigars!

                          Part One - LCDH Fincato

At the heart of the city is Fincato, easy to find, and there is a map on their website. Ground floor is all for cigarettes, pipes, pipe tobacco and other bits n bobs. Upstairs is where the action is for the Cigar Smoker. Up front is a small display area/ museum and some displays of accessories.

Through a few little twists and turns to the back is a nice walk in humidor. It's not huge, but from what i have seen, the sticks are exceptionally well kept. In terms of stock, Rome is a busy city, and they were not holding huge amounts. There was a substantial selection of singles to be had, but boxes were a little more limited. That said the ones i asked for, and they didnt have, were the hard to find smokes that are tough to source anywhere! As a LCDH they only stock CC's, except for a good selection of the Italian domestic cigars.

Downstairs is run by a fairly austere old boy, who i guess is accustomed to gawkers popping in and out. Upstairs run by a very friendly and informed chap. I am blessed by MLW being a fluent Italian speaker, but his English was impeccable. Regrettably i cant recall his name... Heat addled brain... And he is easy going and friendly, with a willingness to share knowledge and talk smokes.

I was impressed and would say they are worth a visit if you are in the Eternal City!

Part Two- Tabacchi & other stores

Overall Rome is pretty well served. The majority of the Tabacchi are focused upon cigs and domestic cigars. But about one in three have a humidor with other smokes. Dotted around the centre of town are some fascinating pipe stores, and pipe-makers. I didn't note them all down, but if anyone is really interested i'd be happy to roughly point them out on a map.

Most tabacchi are small, so popping your head in to assess if they have sticks takes only a split second. A few Tabacchi of note were on either side of the Pantheon. One was a restaurant /cafe with a cabinet humidor of Davidoffs and Dunhills, and a sizeable (what looked to be a wineador) humi filled to busting with CC's. Quite Monte and Cohiba heavy, they covered the other bases of Por Larranga, Partagas, HdM and a few others, plus a fair number of Behikes. They seemed to be geared to selling singles, albeit appeared to have stocks to cope with selling the boxes. They ordered from the Fincato catalogue, so imagine prices matched. The price list can be downloaded from the Fincato website.

On the otherside of the Pantheon is a Food & Wine store which is filled with novelty pasta and limincello bottles. However, at the back left is the tobacco. Again a strong domestic & european selection, coupled with a hearty seleccion of boli, cohiba monte, and hdm tubos/ boxed 1's and 3's.

Overall Rome doesnt seem to mind cigar smokers one bit. It's an outdoor city and there are still plenty of cig smokers, so finding a picturesque vista to absorb while enjoying your stick of choice, isn't hard to do!
