My only experience with Heathrow and cigars was eavesdropping on the vendor trying to persuade Peter Jones of Dragons Den fame to buy a cabinet of something he didn't want, he didn't get the sale, and I didn't get my copy of Theo Paphetis's book signed either.
I've just flown via Heathrow T5 and in general prices are cheaper from online suppliers, although you can occasionally find a regional at a good price. If you know that there's nothing available at the other end then buy if you find something .
Why would buy before you fly? Surely cheaper at the other end??
I normally do, and it it cheaper in ZA. About 1/2 the price. HK is about 1/3 the price. I was looking at the prices for day trips for work to Europe when I don't have time to see the local B&M or spend time in the duty free coming back.

You don't get duty free traveling to europe, did they have two pricing structure
I'm pretty sure I read something recently that suggested the prices in so called duty free shops was to be investigated by some watchdog or other as they were found not to be passing on the saving to customers.
the duty free is not that good these days, they used to have a "cigar hut " which was good , I used to look for the special offer cigars , they used to be cigars with a few years age on the them, and been picked over a few times, they must have thought if they had not sold, put them on special, had a few good buys
