Just back from a week in France, and i have to say it was a cracking place but fairly spartan on the cigar front.

if you want domestic and some various NC then you have some choice, but Monte's are the default Cuban in most tabac's if they have a 'Cave du Cigars'.

i found a well stocked tabac in Quimper, the cultural capital of west brittany, but it was a tragic episode..... While browsing some interesting NC's at eye height, i thought i spotted a couple with bloom. My heart began to quicken! A well stocked, well kept, seleccion at decent prices! Then i spotted below a very very well stocked cuban section! a quick glance showed some of the usual suspects, and some more interesting and rarer smokes. And then i spotted a nice HdM with what i supposed was bloom, and then i looked closer... And upon inspection the whole darn cuban cabinet was clothed in mould. Every stick...

i would have snagged a picture but the owner spotted my wallet going away rather quickly and began to frown! I've had some succes recovering lightly moulded sticks in the past, so i briefly contemplated offering him silly money to get rid of his duff stock but figured my French wasnt up to haggling standard!

a disappointing trip on the cigar front, other than enjoying a very nice NC with a decent bottle of vintage (95) P&J Belle Epoque champagne.... Good champagne and a decent smoke is a. pairing i will definitely be trying again.

A handmade Don Juan Urquijo Vintage Blend 1993. Been tucked away since about 1996/7. image.jpg
There is a pic of it in one of my previous humi pics.... A large pale pyramides. Bands in the pic. Superb wrapper that looked like fine sandy coloured writing paper. Was a beaut. Flavours were gentle, soft andleathery, with an unexpected belt of perfumed fruityness smack in the middle, before going back to well rounded refined steady smooth cedary leatheryness! Steady draw, not too open and certainly not hard work. No relights and no corrections required.

years ago some one in a st james based merchant with a dept in the green and gold corner store suggested it was one to age.... So i did. Not seen them since.... And now wish i'd bought a box! Sadly i know nothing more about these sticks, but is in the list of smokes to find out about and smoke again!

It was heart breaking.... I'd bundled through a bunch of tabacs with cash in hand to pick up a few boxes to no avail, then to find this shop who humi cabinet looked awesome as you stood back.... But then leaning in to read the prices etc... Realising everything was covered in fine downy feintly blueish fuzz was a swift kick in the pants!

Bugger. Like you said earlier, a little patch here or there is worth taking a chance but when there's a couple of Petri dishes worth on each, it's past experimental time.
