hey all I am looking to go cuba in roughly september. now i have looked into it and the place looks amazing and I'm sure i will have a great time. but before i go i just wanted to have an understanding of cigars. while i am in cuba i want to buy a humidor and some cigars but i have no idea what i am looking at. now at the weekend just gone i went to a local cigar shop and tried a couple out to see if i liked them and I'm not sure what you are meant to taste or anything so just a bit lost at the minute. i tried an h.upmann a san cristobal and a monte cristo. well i haven't had the cristo yet. but if anyone can help in recommending things, i am willing to try anything

I'm not sure I would bother with buying a humidor in Cuba, its extra weight to bring back and you can get excellent, cheap ones here easily enough.
In terms of smoking, I would just recommend trying as many cigars as possible, you might not get the flavours now, but they soon start becoming more noticeable as you try more cigars, to be honest there is no better place to start smoking cigars than Cuba, so make the most of it while you're out there

All the cigars shops sell sampler and singles, buy a selction. Maybe start by trying some the following which are some of the smoother brands and good starters: Romeo y Julietta, El Ray del Mundo, Sancho Panda, Punch, Hoyo de Monterray

I went back in May, armed with a list of the cigars I wanted to try. I didn't get to try everything on my list but smoked others that weren't on it. I wrote notes as I went which helped me chose what to bring home.
Personally I'd buy your humidor elsewhere. Weight and physical size as well as over zealous baggage handlers might make it a costly purchase. Plus, if you purchase before you go you could have it seasoned, ready for your return.

As above, don't bother buying a humi in cuba.
Don't buy cigars from street sellers, pool or beach lifeguards, hotel staff that have brothers/ uncles/sisters/pet donkey that works in a factory, or anyone that offers to get you 'cheap' cigars (you are in cuba......cigars are bloody cheap anyway!!!) They are guaranteed to be fakes!
Only buy from legitimate shops, your hotel will probably have one.
For e.g i was smoking Partagas E2 at ?6.50 over there......its a ?22 smoke in the UK.

You realy need to try the cigars you think might suit you, we can all recommend cigars to you that we like
but then again you might not like them easy for us to say buy this and try that
before you know it newbie you have spent a small fortune, been there myself
no rush take your time buy one or two smoke them, if you like them make a note of the cigar etc so you know the brand and the way it smoked.
