Wash your mouth out! Charles de Gaulle was anything but a surrender monkey.

PJ should be able to affirm his success in regaining ground agains the Nazi's with the French armoured division.

So was I, hence my tongue in cheek acceptance that all but de Gaulle were indeed "cheese eating surrender monkeys"

C'mon lads. Enough with the anti-French stuff, tongue-in-cheek or not. We have some French members and what you're saying is pretty offensive. I for one, love France and the French people. Amazing country!

Sorry wiggy military history is a favorite subject of mine , the military might of the third Reich in 1939/1943 was an unstoppable machine , which fortunately suffered its demise mainly due in part from the madness of its controller . And in the end took the might of many nations to eventually conquer it .
We as a nation had no choice but to evacuate France at Dunkirk . The French had to endure until June 1945 under German occupation and suffered terrible injustices and horrific tragedies eg oradur sur glane .
The French resistance fought bravely and aided many airmen to safety , and the free French forces under De Gaul fought along side our forces . And as for the cuisine , gastronomy and drink all I can say is vive la France et bravo !!!

I understand what you're saying John, true or not. I just don't want the hate being expressed here. I know everyone is just playing around (he says hopefully)

                      Nope, I really like them.

Edit: a quote from myself last time I spoke about them.

I lit one up as I was writing this..... If I could go back this instant, I would buy 50 of them.

I picked up a box of por larranaga panatelas in Paris for about 70 euros last december. Not as cheap as spain but certainly cheaper than UK prices. I also picked up a siglo 3 for about 15 euros.

Le lotus in Paris is an excellent shop. Knowledgable, enthusiastic staff who didnt mind my poor french. Never tried a french cigar but love the food, wine, people and country.

Now that is the kind of bargain I was hoping for.... thanks for the insight.

As for the non-french sentiment... it was not 'anti' but good humoured. I am an unabashed Francophile... et vive la difference... my comments were based upon some ancient memories as a teenager smoking crafty cigarettes and trying to look the part with a straggly 'local' cigar on a sneaky night club trip. As a teenager I was lucky enough to spend most of my holiday time living in the deep south. Being in proper rugby country (* and Resistance country), smokes (!), booze and cheese all seemed to be actively encouraged to be on the strong side!!

Armagnac... fine XO Cognac and anything from Burgundy... all goes down well with me. So who knows... if there is a local puro that has some appeal I will no doubt give it a run. But... as my smoke time is limited to down time once the kids have gone to bed, its going to have to be a pretty good looking smoke to tempt me away from the treats in my travel humi!

i'll even commit to reviewing it... If I find one tempting enough!
