I have decided to make this a separate thread to make it more easily searchable for anyone planning to go here on holiday.
As soon as you clear the endless security checks there is a duty free shop on the left that sells only booze and tobacco and has a large selection of Dominican and Nicaraguan cigars. Included here were Davidoffs, AVOs, Ashtons and Arturo Fuente Opus X. They had those cool little Opus X tins at $175. Alongside such luminaries were a lot of cheapies including Swisher Sweets! Overall prices here were cheaper than the resort shops but dearer than the USA but of course no postage or duty to pay if you stay within the limits. A box of Romeo y Juliet Reserva Real Verona Court were $225 in the resort but $190 here.
Once you pass this shop you enter a large seating area in front of gates 1-4. There is another good-sized duty free shop on the right but it was one of those where you have to pass out through a bank of tills so I gave it a miss but they had plenty of cigars on show.
Head towards the food court and pass through it towards gates 5-9 and you have to go through another duty free shop. This shop has a cigar cabinet next to the till at the far end where I was excited to see Cuban Bolivars on display. Sadly they had no GMs or Lonsdales, only No 2 Tubos, Coronas and BBFs. The latter were $375 for 25 or about a tenner each. They were dated 2013
Finally in the waiting area for these gates there is a fourth shop with cigars in the window. Here I was tempted by a box of VegaFina Perlas Tubos but they were $8 each as opposed to ?3.50 in Europe.
The lesson in the DR is to know your prices before you go.
