  • That's Paris off the list then...

Apparently smoking is now banned in all Parisian parks with other outdoor spaces to follow

The initiative, which is likely to now be extended to other outdoor public spaces, was introduced over the weekend as part of an official campaign cut smoking deaths in France.

What with the bestial Danes and now the purified Parisians, there does seem to be some anomalies in terms of a Euro approach to what is salutary for self or others ay

Last time I was in paris a few years ago now, the smoking ban was in place but I bought and smoked a cigar in a few restuarants.

Perhaps someone could persuade governments to introduce 'smoking parks' and 'non-smoking parks' just as there are smoking areas in restaurants in some cities.

I know this won't be popular amongst you guys but I actually think banning smoking in public places is a good idea.
Although most of us would (I hope) use our heads and not smoke near kids and pregnant ladies, I can't tell you how many times I've taken my kids to the park to play on the swings etc only to find some dick smoking IN the kids play park. The same goes for the high street, I just don't think it a suitable place for smoking. If you want to have a public smoke then obviously you need to take others into consideration and separate yourself from groups of people. The problem lies in that most of the population is formed of idiots or selfish individuals which means that the only way to protect the vulnerable groups is to ban everyone from smoking in certain areas. I think a blanket ban on smoking in public places goes too far but I'd like to see places like play parks and the high street designated as no smoking areas. Councils would have to decide where is suitable and where is not.
I never smoke in public places unless it is either a designated smoking area or I am away from the general populace.
Now I understand that this view isn't going to go down well but think about this not with yourselves as the smoker but the muppets who have no respect for others. You have to look at the worst case scenario with these things.
I also think that people who don't clean up their dog's crap should have the animals taken away. It's the most vulnerable people that are most likely to step in it.
You may now all give me what for. [emoji16]

Mostly in the USA but also in certain parts of Europe.

But for children whose parents do smoke constantly in the house, it would probably be better for the child's health if they restricted more of their smoking to outdoor areas.

I agree with play areas but parks in general is pushing it too far and as for all public places, where are the nicotine addicts going to smoke if not outside their work places. I can see the day coming when smokers say 'f**k it' and light up anywhere. Who's going to stop them?

Agreed, a blanket public area ban would be foolish.

On my way to work, I see van drivers smoking in company vans.
I see people talking on the phone whilst driving.
I see dogs shitting on the ground while the owners walk on.
I see fly tipping and generic rubbish dumping.

I for one don't do any of these. But if smoking was banned in parks, I would gladly stick my finger up at the world, and say 'who's going to stop me?'
The same people that stop all the other people doing any of the above on the list?

That's the other side of it, a selective ban or any other ban is unenforceable. What we need is a general public that have morals and who are considerate to other people's needs. I'd be ok with Dredd style judges sentencing those wankers to death on the spot! Well perhapse not but I really hate people who think only of themselves.
