Just booked a holiday in Madeira in a couple of weeks. Checked online and there is a couple of Casa's in Funchal, but does anyone have experience of buying and smoking on the island?

Seems there's quite an abundance of places to smoke and places to buy .... only issue, everywhere on the island you'll be confronted with images and statues of Funchal's most famous son .... Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro. If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

I have been to Madeira. Though it was long before I was into Cigars.
What I can tell you though is, that a Hoyo Du Maire with a Dry Madeira wine will set you up nicely for a meal of Espetada.... And a Montecristo No.2 with a Sweet Madeira will finish that meal off nicely!

So, still in Madeira and went off hunting for the LCDH which, according to news reports online, opened in 2011. Found the address in town and devastated to report that the shop has closed down. Spoke with some of the other shops on either side of the old store and found out that it had gone out of business and there are now officially "no Cuban cigars available of Madeira Island" - luckily I came well prepared, but it is always nice to support the local economy with a few purchases in a friendly cigar shop (or at least that is how I justify it to my ever sceptical wife!)
I would perhaps post a word of warning, and I hope I am not being overly cautious, but the LCDH in Madeira was linked to/owned by a Spanish online retailer who's name can 'sort of' be linked to a trilogy of movies, directed by Francis Ford Coppola (geddit?), and I just hope that the situation in Madeira is not indicative of the overall business. Just urging caution if you are buying from them.

Eeek... Then that makes very poor planning on our part. Although i am not suprised th lcdh place went bump... Its a very sleepy island. Mind you it gets a lot of cruise ships so maybe there was logic...
Will dust off the travel humi then."Dear heart, you're talking to a man- a real man- who drinks straight Tequilla, with lime and salt on the rim, and smokes cigars" (J Zavala)

we've been before and loved its laid back outlook. but it was quite sime time ago.... In fact so long ago that i was able to board the return flight with 9 bottles of rather special madeira secreted about my person!!! Not a trick i'd get away with this time i suspect!"Dear heart, you're talking to a man- a real man- who drinks straight Tequilla, with lime and salt on the rim, and smokes cigars" (J Zavala)
