  • My non-smoking time in Majorca

... during our stay I smoked ZERO cigars. I did attempt one or two of the Toscano Toscanello which Captain Q had gifted to me a week or so previously but couldn't finish them. Basically I began the holiday with a dreadful head cold which blew up my sinuses and then developed into a heavy chest infection.

I'lliot/San Coma the resort we stayed at, had several Tabacs. Spanish, Canary Islands and NC were the mainstay, but each had a selection of Cubans. I think there must be some sort of agreement going on as there was no overlap in what they sold. One Tabac sold Cohiba, Punch and RyJ while another majored Montecristo, JLP and Rafael Gonzales. Cigars were also available at some of the hotels but at 20% above the street price.

Unfortunately I missed out on the trip to Los Palmas (having to sit on a coach and snort yellow crap into a tissue every five minutes was just too uncomfortable and embarrassing a prospect), but apparently there are one or two good cigar shops in the town, just a shame I had to miss out.

Prices surprised me, they weren't as cheap as I had expected. The Duty Free at Los Palmas airport had self-service humidor and a reasonable Cuban selection plus masses of Guan and LFdC. All I bought was a 5 pack of Siglo I's, I did think about getting a box of Partagas 898 but dithered so long about it I ran myself out of time, as we needed to get to our departure gate which was a fair walk away and I wasn't feeling that great anyway (It's a big airport!).

So that's it. Apart from the pack of Cohiba that I bought. I took something like 20 tubos and the Toscanello out with me .... and ALL the tubos came back.

Awww hell that sucks, shame that it spoiled your holiday, and no cigars to boot.....they should cover that on travel insurance.......

3.4 Should the policy holder be too unwell to either smoke or enjoy cigars then we (the insurer) will repay the entire cost of the trip, in addition we will send the policy holder a cigar gift certificate equal to ?400.

    How you feeling now though?

Better. The sinus problem is almost gone, the coughing (touch wood) has stopped. I've still got pains in the back and chest, but I think that's a result of bruising caused by the almost constant dry coughing. I must admit it did spoil the holiday. Generally I can sit in the sun for hours, but this time around I didn't feel up to it and spent the majority of my time either on our balcony or a one of the bars .... the forever nose blowing made me feel like a bit of a leper and I didn't want to be around or disturb other people.

Yeah I know what you mean, I remember being on a flight once with a terrible cough, all night long I coughed and coughed, I could feel all the daggers in the back of my head. Shame it spoiled it for you.

          Sorry to hear that Tipp

I have just got past the worst of a horrendous cough I had for about 3 weeks.

After an evening's coughing I got into bed feeling like I'd been in a cage fight. It is incredible the amount of power your chest and back muscles can put into a cough.

You'll have to go back and smoke twice as many cigars

Sorry to hear you had a rough time Tipp, but look on the bright side, you still have all those smokes to look forward to.

Get well soon mate, no point smoking when your under the weather, better keep your powder & tobacco dry until you can fully enjoy it. Hopefully the weather will improve in Blighty & you can enjoy plently of outdoor smoking this summer.
