I saw something about 200 cigars, 800 cigarettes etc.

Is this like a soft limit?

I understand theoretically there are no actual limits, but would you have a hard time convincing customs say 1000 cigars are for personal consumption?

The allowance is 1 kilo of tobacco = 5 cartons of cigarettes = few boxes of cigars (I forgot)
From 1 kg up to 2kg you must complete an "accompanying document". No charges.
Beyond 2kg… you're in trouble…

The way I understand it: the more you have the harder it is to prove personal use. 1000 cigarettes is only 50 days at 20 per day. But as above 1000 stogies is gonna be a bitch to prove for personal use.

I'm not aware of hard limits, but the above figures are the point the start asking probing questions.

I'd rather know for sure my haul would make it through, than risk a bit more and lose the lot.

I take it they confiscate them all if they think you are selling on?

I'm only going to be bringing back 50 or maybe 75 if I have a lot of work up until the holiday, so I shall be fine

Yeah, they can confiscate it all, and if you drove they can crush your car as well.

Just be hopeful there isn't anyone working customs on the day you return.

Returning from the USA at 6am into Manchester has always worked well in the past for me...
