Trinidad Fundadores
Size: 192mm x 39 ? Laguito Especial
Smoke time: 2hrs 5mins
Box date: Gifted by Puff Scottie the cigar was from a 2003 or 2005 lay down. My apologies to Puff for not being able to remember which.
Appearance: Manly and elegant. Beautifully rolled and firm to the touch with a honey coloured which was lightly veined and finished with a perfectly applied cap and pigtail.
Construction: No burn or draw problems at all. The burn started straight and never wavered. The draw was slightly tight to resistive, which I think is perfect for smoking this size of cigar in that it helps the smoker regulate the draw strength and tempo. The mid-grey ash stayed compact and firm throughout the smoke, and needed few tap-offs (see photos). No re-lights, no corrections.
Flavour: The pre-draw aroma was hay. The initial taste was also haylike and accompanied by a light lemon undernote. Getting into the first quarter inch or so of the smoke and the haylike flavour vanished to be replaced by a dry woodiness. Unfortunately the woodiness was not that of an Autumn forest or antique joinery, in fact being more reminiscent of plywood and sawdust. The woodiness was still supported by some lemonlike sweetness but the effect not a good balance and if anything counteractive. The smoke texture at this point was light and without any creaminess and the taste strength I would catagorise as Medium. The taste coating my mouth whilst containing some citrus was predominantly wood and very, very dry. At around the third mark I did pick up a burst of some honey, but this weakened and disappeared very quickly. Throughout the second third the cigar ?flatlined? with no progression or difference to the disappointing and very mono-wood taste. In the final third the wood flavour deepened, and then ?thankfully? became more leathery and earthy with hints of coffee/expresso and dark chocolate. During the final third the smoke quality also improved becoming slightly fuller and more creamy.
Overall: On today?s showing I would describe the cigar as being ?jaded?, not a good smoke and not on-a-par with my previous, if limited experience with this vitola. In many respects I wish I?d smoked one of my ?greener? 2009s for this review as I believe today?s example may have been in or entering a ?down? period. A belief which I think with can be supported by the seemingly total absence of nicotine power.
Usually a World beating cigar. But today like Sonny Liston, it sat on it?s chair.
Montecristo Especial v Trinidad Fundadores.
Montecristo E No1 ? by (today's)unanimous points decision.
