  • Trinidad Reyes (Ouch!)

    Good afternoon ladies and gents.

I picked up a few sticks yesterday, I was especially excited about the Trinidad Reyes after all the recommendations I've had on here.

Introduction: Very good construction, decent scent on the cigar and very sturdy.

First third: The first third of the cigar was very Earth, in fact there is no point reviewing the second and final third of the cigar because it was very consistent throughout, something I've never experienced with any cigar before. Saying that, I did enjoy the cigar as it was woody and Earthy with the odd hint of a flowery taste.

I did enjoy this cigar but I know what the problem is, the cigar was young, very young and I didn't realise it would need to be aged. My plan is to keep some Reyes in the humi for at least 10 months and I'll keep another for 14 - 16 months to see how they progress. Saying that, I think out of any cigar I've smoked to date, the Reyes had the best draw and construction. I'm not sure how common a consistent taste is, perhaps somebody else on here has had the same experience with the Reyes?

The smoke was very light and mellow, there wasn't much of it either which I quite like as if you're out at a restaurant some people don't like heaps of cigar smoke blowing in their faces. There is no strong after taste in my mouth, I do like the after taste and the Bolivar JC left me with a lovely tangy taste .

Overall, I'd give this cigar 7.5/10 but I'm confident with age, that score would increase.

I nearly finished the cigar BUT I burn't myself by accident which caused me to drop the cigar right at the end , got a nice burn on my forearm now too which will probably scar but I'm a fan of scars as they remind you not to be clumsy and can take you back in time!

Overall, a decent cigar with fantastic construction and a consistent taste.

Flavours: Very woody, Earthy with the occasional floral taste.

    Rick.

Thats definitely one of the most eventful and colourful experiences anyone has had with a Reyes

Your right on ageing, most Trini's need at least a couple of years on them to lose that harshness.

Hmmm ... who has the most impressive cigar related scar I wonder?

Nice review, Rick. (pity about the 3rd degree burn though...)

Of the few Reyes I've had, the consistency is one of it's main draws for me - I've only smoked singularly purchased sticks from JJF, so although they aren't 'aged' I'm sure they at have least been held back for a while to develop into their expected profile...

I arrived at the same conclusion you did (re: ageing) so I've ordered up a box to 'lay down' and my plan is to do this every six months or so to grow an aged stock...in the meantime, I'll still smoke singles/5's from retailers, such as JJF, as they still are representative of the brand, IMHO.

These are just simply one of the best cigars I've had, so far... they do look the nuts, and the construction is superb. The light, creamy smoke is just another 'tick' for the Reyes as a sociable cigar.

Lol! It was quite eventful Dave, but that cigar did need some ageing, nevertheless it was a decent smoke, nothing wrong with it at all.

I think we should get some pictures up but I think we should state that nobody should purposely scar themselves just to win this comp !

Here is my latest burn, it's not formed a bubble yet but it will: DSC00523.jpgDSC00521.jpg

Thanks, Steve! I know that the potential is there, I loved the floral taste and the woodiness of the cigar but it was too young and silly of me to smoke it at this stage, I just couldn't help myself . The gentleman serving me in the shop did say that they were quite new and they had to be ordered in especially for me, I will pick up a couple of them to age though, without a doubt but I definitely agree with you about the draw, it was the best I've had with any cigar.

I like the sound of the plan too, I will do the same with my sticks that I purchase, smoke one every X months to see how they're progressing. I didn't taste any cream but the smoke was very, very light.

        Rick.

Nice review and a great little cigar usually.

Sorry about your burn. Goes with the territory I 'spose, but what doesn't kill you can only .... make you buy more!

Pity this one didn't blow you away. Some are very smokeable when young but the first from my recent box sounds like your one. I guess they didn't have the single boxes any more then?

Nice review. i did enjoy each Reyes i've smoked but also agree that they would probably taste better aged. Maybe I should buy a few sticks and put them away for a while.

Your burn story reminded me of one of mine..

A while back when I used to smoke cigarette and you were allowed to do so in pubs. I was smoking at a table and brushed my cigarette against my friends hand by accident. He made a big scene even though I apologised and when I said it couldn't of hurt that much he said I'll do it to you and see what you think.

So too prove a point I grabbed my cig and put put it out on my left hand. Now I have been left with a perfect white scar on my left hand to remind of being stupid that night.
