Sorry, no pics today. I can?t find my camera. I?ve either a) mislaid it or b) Chris has taken it as she?s going to an office retirement do this evening.
Appearance: Long and slim, not quite under the Lancero umbrella being 7 mm shy in length, and sporting no pig-tail. This one had a rich, dark Colorado wrapper, which isn?t really significant as I have several others in various lighter shades. The wrapper was toothy with a few veins the roll if anything was slightly rustic, but the cap well and neatly applied.
Construction: Feeling along the barrel the cigar felt nicely packed with just the slightest resistance. The burn was perfect and as straight as a die from start to finish. The (very) dark gray ash was solid and compact, and I?m sure would have ?held? had I let it, but I just think that a long ash looks ?wrong? on this type of vitola and was tapping off at every half inch or so. No re-lights, no corrections, eight tap offs.
Flavour: The pre-light aroma was woody, I had expected it to be slighty floral but the heady woodiness was all I could detect. On light-up the initial hits were a sweet blend of wood and cherry quickly joined by a deliciously vanilla/softened version of the familiar Cuban ?twang?. Progressing into the first third the sherbetlike citric flavour became stronger but not sufficiently enough to dominate the wood, cherry and plumlike quality of the flavours already there. Still not yet into the second half and the flavours mix begins to become sweet/caramelised, but still offset by the woodiness that provides a delicious balance. In the second third the strength of the woods increases, but not with any determent to the fruits and honeys which are the essence of the smoke. In the final third the flavour tones deepened and became much richer. I also picked up some pepper and chocolate notes, but the finale was intense woods. Amazing.
Overall: A great morning or afternoon?s smoke. Brilliantly constructed stick. The start is deceivingly light but increases in tone and strength to top/middle with every puff. I?ll also add that Med d?O is rewarding and really easy to smoke only if you treat it gently. Smoking them too fast somehow destroys and marrs the taste. The cigar is also very refreshing, I had a cup of tea handy but didn?t need it, experiencing no dryness in the mouth whatsoever.
A rare cigar now, but for anyone who gets the chance, grab one you?ll be rewarded by a cigar experience to remember. Thanks Andy!
