As some of you know I bought this MC2 GR in an auction on this site. Was in Montreal last week where I had the opportunity to share it with my uncle, a long time connoisseur who actually introduced me to the MC2 some 20 odd years ago. We smoked it alongside a regular production MC2 and traded back and forth. For what its worth, here is a pic for proof and our findings :
fyi: I am mostly a Cuban smoker, my uncle, who lives in Canada where CC prices have simply become outrageous, now smokes alot more NCs that he gets from friends south of the border.
construction: GR= perfect roll and draw, regular = slightly under-packed. You will also notice the enormous difference in the colour of the ash in the pic, I am sure.
taste : The GR is a world apart in terms of smoothness and sophistication. On the other hand to my mind, it sacrifices a bit of flavour and complexity to get that extra smoothness.
Overall: For my uncle this was the best cigar he had ever smoked. I personally had a similar reaction as to the recent Behikes : yes its smooth, but I'll take a bit more harshness if it comes with more flavour/complexity. I would still take a MC2 GR over a Behike anyday though, and even over a regular line MC2 when I wanted that extra smoothness based on what I was drinking. I hear these are coming out in France at 35 euros a pop. If that is the case, they are well worth the price !
