Montecristo Petit Edmundo Tubos

Appearance: Chunky. Smooth, slightly oily tan coloured wrapper with very few veins and a nicely applied triple cap. The cigar was a Tubos version presented in the 2008 introduced, new style Monte tubes. Standard band ?C?.
Construction: The cigar felt compact in the hand and well packed. The give along the length was firm yet nicely yielding. A quick snip with my trusty CC cutter and the triple cap hit the ashtray easy as anything. The pre-draw was good. The smoking draw was excellent, the burn however was terribly wayward ? ?everywhere and nowhere baby?, if you know what I mean ? and correction didn?t help much. Around the first third, a small carbuncle formed creating a wrapper tear which only added to the burn misery. The ash, though compact enough not to fall off, was ragged and scruffy.
Flavour: The pre-light aroma, although I?m not sure how much of it was due to the Tubos cedar lining, was wood and leather. The smoke from the cigar was generous and creamy and carried a mild pepperiness in the woody aroma. The cigar opened and ended on wood. The Cuban ?twang?, when it arrived after several puffs, was very much an undernote, the bitter sweet taste although subtle, was very clean and relaxed progressively untill it had all but disappeared in the final third. The second third was wood, wood and more wood, which may sound a little monotonous but was in fact quite delicious. There was also the occasional hint of powdery sweet cocoa and warmed pepper. Over the final third the wood flavours became deeper and richer and the cocoa lost its sweetness and took on a higher reach chocolatey edge. Over the final inch or so the flavours merged, became more powerful and took on a delightful leathery character. I enjoyed it very much.
Overall: A very nice medium flavoured cigar but ruined today by the poor burn. Probably an excellent after dinner smoke but I?d be embarrassed smoking a similar, ragged-arsed example in company. The cigar did have a fair nicotine kick in the finale, so Newbees beware.
