  • Short Winter Smoke ? 28

    Bolivar Coronas Junior
    Size: 110 mm x 42 ? Minuto
    Smoke time: 47 mins.

Cigar box date: Unknown. Source: www.jjfox.co.uk

Appearance: Like a rough chocolate finger. Boxy, slightly squared across the section with a toothy, red/brown wrapper carrying surprisingly few veins and perfectly rolled to cover and conceal the triple cap. Bolivar Standard band ?B?.

Construction: The cigar felt well packed yet slightly yielding along the entire length. The pre-draw was slightly resistive and the smoking draw absolutely perfect. Unfortunately, the initial burn developed into a ?run?, which I corrected, it then stayed pretty much straight right to the finish. The mid grey ash remained firm and compact throughout the smoke. Three tap offs, no re-lights, one correction (see pics).

Flavour: The pre-light aroma is damp, earthy tobacco. Before I attempt to described the tastes, I?m going to say I loved this cigar because within a tight parameter it stayed true to its start. What I got at the beginning I more or less got at the end, with a few delicious surprises in between. The start was earth, spice and coffee with the familiar Cuban zesty ?twang? arriving a few puffs behind. As the third progressed light wood entered the mix and the coffeelike flavour became slightly more bitter and toasted. Although generally earthy and woody the flavours were not ?dry?, because the sweeter, more refreshing citric notes beneath were holding everything in perfect balance. The smoke quality is full and creamy with a woody aroma. The reto-hale is distinctly peppery. Two thirds in and the flavours, although still basically the same, became just a little more rounded and full untill suddenly picking up a deliciously salty edge which lasted for a good half inch or so. Into the final third and the Boli simply picked up another gear allowing in more light wood and pepper while the other flavours gained more in intensity. Bloomin? Marvelous!

Overall: Thoroughly deserving of its www.cigars-review.org rateing and straight into the tippexx ?more of? list. I would catagorise this cigar as full flavoured, higher-light to medium in body and would make ? to my mind at least ? a perfect Matinee smoke. Because it was a Bolivar I was expecting little more in tobacco strength, however given the ?B? band I suspect the example I smoked may have had a few years age on it.

Forgive me if this has already been requested, mentioned or promised, but when you conclude your series of short winter smoke tastings can we have it compiled into a document, pdf or whatever, please? I think I would like to sit and read through it when complete like so many of the US TV shows that I wait to watch when I have an entire season to watch in on sitting, or similar.

I wouldn't know how to do that T.

If Deano could head it all under short smokes, and remove the headings Short Winter Smokes 1, 2, 3 etc it would become a Forum resource to help answer the on-going requests from new members for help on short smokes.

I'm nearly out now. I've just two or three left which I can do. I could go back, and re-review several I did earlier last year, but I've no problem with others taking over and helping fill the gaps.

It was just an idea, start a forum library type thing. Great work anyway.

I enjoyed this review. Not sure how I've not managed to try one of these yet but I'll probably just order a box as I suspect I'll love them. How do they compare with the Royal Corona in terms of taste?
