La Gloria Cubana M?daille d'Or No.4
Origin: Cuba
Size: 152 mm x 30 ? Palmita
Smoke time: 45 mins.
Cigar box date: OSU JUL 02.
Note: Current production, packed 898 (Varnished).
Appearance: Long, but only half again as long as a ERdM demi tasse and shorter than a PL Montecarlos. Rough, toothy, red/brown wrapper with one or two imperfections. (And why this particular cigar was picked on to get the burn). Standard embossed LGC band ?A.?
Construction: Nigh on perfect, firm but gently resistive along the entire length. The pre-draw was easy and left a fresh citrus taste on the lips. The smoking draw was a delight and lazily easy from start to finish. The burn was dead straight with the mid grey ash remaining firm and nicely compacted throughout the smoke. If there was an issue, it was due to my fault, I removed the band too carelessly, too soon and tore the wrapper. Five tap offs, no re-lights, no corrections (see pics).
Flavour: The pre-light aroma is faintly barnyard, with hay over woody tobacco. The first puffs were woody which quickly evolved into delicious, refreshing fruit flavours that had an almost candied quality akin to marmalades or fruit cakes. The Cuban ?twang? when it arrived was subtly ?at the back? and lightly bitter sweet. While lacking in volume, the smoke quality had pleasantly fragrant woody aroma. Into the second third the fruit tastes were joined by a soft, honeylike mellowness and then slowly eased back to be replaced by warm, dryer, woodier flavours which complimented the still detectable ?twang? of sour citrus as a backnote. Over the last third the flavour depth increased, and for a short period switched from woods to tastes vaguely more vegetable ? sweet pepper, olives, apple chutney and mushrooms ? before finally finishing on a deep, rich earthiness over a light and occasional note of licorice. And the penalty for todays smoke is a deliciously woody aftertaste and numb lips.
Overall: I really liked this cigar. (It?s one of my favourite Cubans). It?s delightfully flavoursome, and if smoked slowly and easily will deliver a nicely balanced exploration of fruits, woods and earth. The flavours strength I?m going to catagorise as generally medium but ramping-up to medium/strong for the finale. I would happily recommend giving this cigar a try to anyone. Brilliant smoke IMHO!
Note: No significant tobacco strength untill into the last third, but as long as it?s treated with respect, most beginners should be able to manage OK.
