Cigar: Punch Tres Petit Coronas
Size: 110 ins x 42 ? Minutos
Origin: Cuba
Smoke time: 40 mins
Cigar box age: H&F 1998. Source www.mysmokingshop.co.uk
Note: Discontinued 2002 but still reasonably available in the UK.
Appearance: Squared, ?pressed-in-the box? barrel cross section with a rough toothed Colorado wrapper and a neatly applied triple cap. Double banded, the cigar carried the now discontinued Punch Standard band ?A? with the H&F 1998 Vintage band beneath
Construction: Feeling nicely balanced in-the-hand the cigar was solidly packed and had a nice reassuring ?pinch? at the band. Resistive pre-draw. Excellent smoking draw. The burn was straight and I was really impressed by the firmness of the ash which required a good ?rap? on the ashtray to remove. Two tap offs, no re-lights, no corrections.
Flavour: The pre-light aroma was a faint chocolate tobacco. The start was distinctly chocolate with the Cuban lemon citric ?twang? kicking-in just behind. The lemonlike flavour although zesty was also quite subtle in that there is something biscuity about it, so much so it reminded me of lemon cheesecake base. The balance of the two flavours was excellent and the strength of flavour medium to high. The cigar smoke was deliciously creamy and carried a light chocolate aroma. Two thirds in and the chocolate flavour intensified while the counter citric flavour although now in the back-seat still retained it?s refreshing semi-sweet quality. In the last third, the power of the cigar became really apparent with rich chocolate notes, honey caramel supported by the light, but still glorious Cuban sweetness beneath. An afternoon?s delight!
Overall: An excellent little smoke. Not as effervescent flavourwise as the Punch Petit Punch but far more powerful and direct in it?s easy phase transitions. Maybe NOT for Newbees as the tobacco strength becomes quite strong towards the end. This is the second of these I?ve smoked, and maybe I?m becoming more nicotine tolerant, as I remember my first Punch Tres Petit almost put me on my back!
