  • Short Winter Smoke ? 19

    Cigar: Trinidad Reyes
    Size: 110 ins x 40 ? Reyes
    Origin: Cuba
    Smoke time: 43 mins

Cigar box age: OUS SEP 09.

Note: Recommended premium ageing is two years, but will smoke well ?young?. (Monkey will most likely want to hang me if he reads this bit!).

Appearance: Almost flawless. Evenly rolled, silky smooth, milk chocolate coloured wrapper with only the lightest texture in veins ending with the trade-mark Trinidad pig-tail and carryng the distinctive gold embossed standard band ?B?.

Construction: Perfectly cylindrical and perfectly packed from cap to foot with an even degree of ?pinch? everywhere along the barrel. Nicely resistive pre-draw. Smooth, effortless smoking draw. The initial burn if anything let down the otherwise perfect construction, I could have ?righted? it, but decided to let it run hopeing it would straighten ? which it did after an inch or so. The typical Cuban grey ash stayed compact and well behaved throughout the smoke. Three tap offs, no re-lights, no corrections.

Flavour: The pre-light aroma was woody tobacco. On lighting, the first taste sensation was light wood which relaxed after a puff or two when the expected Cuban zingy, citric ?twang? arrived. The balance was just perfect with the wood flavours slightly to the fore. The smoke which was quite light, had an intangible aroma, sometimes woody, sometimes fruit/floral. The first third was wood and pleasant cocoa over the background Cuban sweetness which had a tart, bitter edge and would sometimes increase or more often decrease in intensity. Occasionally support notes reminiscent of toffee/caramel, honey and cedar also entered the mix. The second third was a delightful exploration of woods, perfectly complimented by a balancing level of underlying bitter/sweetness. In the final third the wood flavours weakened, giving way in smooth, delicious transition to deeper leatherlike tones, yet never loosing the amazing bite of subtle sweetness below.

Overall: Wonderful cigar. Sophisticated with refined flavour balance from start to finish. Not as creamy or as sweet as the Cohiba Siglo I, in that the sweetness, while constant throughout the smoke, holds the background and has dryer, sour/bitter more adult quality about it. I enjoyed every minute of the smoke. I found it flavoursome and totally relaxing.

Note: Sadly, a recent Habanos SA instruction to wholesalers and retailers Worldwide, forbids the sale of Trinidad Reyes to Newbee?s on the certain knowledge that they will waste them, and by consequence create an un-necessary shortage of a fine puro, which must only be smoked by experienced cigar smokers and elder Aficionado.

Nope, I have said many times on here that IMHO Trinidads are by far the best young smoke out there.

              Nice review!
I've smoked maybe 35 of these in the last two years and I have to admit that I still don't understand them. Perhaps I've only smoked young sticks, or my palate is undereducated or broken from eating too many chilli peppers but I can't for the life of me rave about them like many others.
They are pleasant enough but there's no characteristic taste that jumps out at me, nothing I could say YES THAT'S A REYES to. I get liquorice sometimes, digestive biscuit others. Nothing particularly noticeable though.
Due to this, I'm trying to leave the ones I've got alone and not smoke more than one every 6 months. This way they will definitely have some age when I finish them.

I think I remember you saying something like that last year Dave, but going by your numbers you've smoked at least a cab up since!
