Cohiba Siglo I
Size: 102 mm x 40 ? Perlas
Smoke time: 40 mins.
Cigar box date: Unknown. Source x5 pack
Appearance: Attractive, with a neatly applied triple cap and a chocolate coloured wrapper carrying thin veins with very few blemishes or imperfections. Coming from a five pack the Siglo I was individually packaged in a corporate smart box and bore the Standard band ?D?.
Construction: The cigar was well filled and had a reassuringly giving ?pinch? along the entire length. The pre-draw along with the smoking draw was slightly resistive ? which to my mind is perfect for the enjoyment of smaller and thinner vitolas ? the burn was absolutely straight, and the mid grey ash remained firm and compact throughout the smoke. Three tap offs, no re-lights, no corrections (see pics).
Flavour: The pre-light aroma is fresh, woody tobacco. The initial hit was zesty grass/flora citrus over nuts quickly giving way to honey, toasted tobacco and sweet caramel saturated with hints of nutmeg, wood and light spice. The tone for the first third was medium/powerful and delightfully complex. The smoke, whist liberal rather than voluminous, was creamy and silky smooth in the mouth, coating my teeth with a delicious citric sweetness. The second third equally delicious when dry woody and deeper floral notes made their introduction. The smoke, still smooth and creamy was delivering notes of spicy leather in the retro-hale. I should have mentioned that throughout the entire smoke journey the Siglo I carried with it an underlying sweetness, this in the final third provided a perfect balance to the better-and-better build-up of dryer, earthier ?mushroom? flavours which entered the smoke along with cinnamon and pepper. By the end, I didn?t want to give it up, in fact I could have happily started another straight away!
Overall: Expensive yes, but that?s because it?s Cohiba. And yes again, there are excellent CC Perlas out there with lower price points. Yet I still loved this little cigar, it was beautifully constructed, packed loads of body and build up in flavour complexity while the intensity remained nicely balanced throughout the (oh, so sadly short ) duration of the smoke.
Note: Not too heavy in tobacco strength. (Newbee?s if you?ve got the curiosity, fill yer boots!). The Siglo I also left a pleasant, light sweet aftertaste, which is still there even as I finish this review.
