  • Partagas 898 Unvarnished

Decided to do one of my simplistic reviews to give others a "heads up" on what I now regard as a fabulous cigar.
    Partagas 898 Unvarnished. '98 from boxcode ??
In the middle of my usual size ranges, this Lonsdale is a heavyweight on taste from the initial draws through to a powerful finish. Hints of Cadbury's Cocoa all the way, not overpowered by the Farriers apron/ wild mushroom flavours coming in the last 2 thirds, very reminiscent of the Dalia de Partagas of earlier production but somewhat more grunt.
These cigars held up suprisingly well in temperatures down to minus 40 & literally were an absolute delight, terrifically easy draw end to end & heaps of smoke a cracking cigar & I want some more...bigger to last longer....

      Nice.

It`s been a couple of years since I tried these, but I do remember them being sme of the better Partagas cigars I have tried.

Hi JLP, looking for a box myself & saw those... I am a little concerned (just a tiny bit as H&F are usually solid) as to the worry - the picture shows 2 bands on the sticks? mine had only the standard Partagas band & I 100% know they are genuine.... just have it in the back of my mind what someone said about "marketing & poor stock shifting".
I can't see H&F doing that but it did raise a flag....

H and F have been putting out all kinds of aged stock with a second band and a 'rivisio' type stamp. In other words they have been through their older stock and 'selected' the best for double banding.

I have heard many mixed comments about the apparent quality. Who has smoked them and has an opinion?

Not an 898 Monkey, but a Partagas

If you want to, you can.

No quite, where I've been a deep freeze is just a normal cupboard against an outside wall.. av daily temp was -22 dropping to between -30 to -45 when the 'breeze' got up

That's exactly what I'd heard & didn't like the sound of it! It always begs the question of correct storage... why would you need to re-select??
&& who ?? does that selection? Re - branding old stock doesn't quite sit well with me.

I bought 3 x 898 singles (1999) this week and they are not double banded, had a look on the website and its only the boxes that have the double band,
I have just smoked one and cannot fault it, burn was perfect and ash only fell off twice with a good solid thud, i had one relight about half way but that was down to me ignoring it in favor of the football, smooth and creamy all the way , had belt of Liquorice at the end of the first third, and the finish was strong, so much so that i have been munching cola cubes and rhubarb and custards to get to a state where i shall be able to sleep, lol.
Burn time 1 hour and 40 mins.

                            The Varnished or Unvarnished?
"In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love, they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock!"

Unvarnished. What do they use to varnish with?, is it Gum Arabic?.
