Cigar: Montecristo Montecristo No.5
Size: 102 mm x 42 ? Perla
Smoke time: 45 mins
Cigar box age: Unknown.
Appearance: Not the greatest of lookers, the Monte 5 appears short, firmly put together and purposeful with a rough, toothy surfaced dark brown wrapper marked with one or two green patches and a network of spider veins.
Construction: Feeling along the barrel the Monte 5 felt solidly packed with a gently resistive ?pinch? at the band. Easy pre-light draw. Faultless smoking draw. The burn, though a little off-line at the start quickly righted itself and thereafter gave no problems. The ash remained firm and well compacted throughout the smoke. Two tap offs. No re-lights and no corrections.
Flavour: Pre-light. Mulched earth and rich tobacco. The first draw was amazing, something spice/berry over sweet earth. The rest of the smoke I?m going to try to describe in two halves, which isn?t going to be quite as easy as it sounds for two reasons. One. The flavour intensity of the Monte 5 was for it?s size outstanding, a high medium to full, without any trace of harshness from start to finish. Secondly, while it?s true to say that ?dry? earth, in the best Martini sense is the predominant flavour, the range of other support flavours that this little cigar is packs is so huge and exquisitely varied I?d still be here tomorrow trying to catagorise them all. The first half is spice over earth untill a honey edged version of the Cuban citrus ?twang? imposes itself over the earth flavours. Then suddenly, sugar and salt together in gloriously flavoured, creamy smoke. The sensation was weirdly delightful with a sweetness backing the mouth while a saltiness coated my lips. Passing the halfway mark, and the Monte unleashed a flavours barrage in and over it?s earth base. Hazel nuts, coffee and a flavour akin to sweet suet being just a few. For the last few inches the flavours became more rounded in tone veering from earth to leather and there was also quite a strong nicotine hit, a bit more than I expected if I?m honest.
Overall: Absolutely marvelous. Possibly this stick get?s a bit overlooked because it?s small or just because it?s a ?production? Monte which we just take for granted. I really rate this little cigar and am dead chuffed I?ve still a few more. Downside. Didn?t want it to end!
Note: Maybe NOT for Newbees, the tobacco strength is quite strong for such a small cigar.
