  • King of Spain Diplomatic Release Lancero

Ok - looked at this stick for long enough, the occasion came and ash was made.

After some research and debate the general consensus is that this stick is probably an old Trinidad blend Fundadores style Lancero made in 1992-6 from 5 year old tobacco.

We recently compared it to other diplomatic release Lanceros (Palm Tree bands) and it appeared smoother and visibly lighter wrapper than the Cohiba based ones.

Construction was faultless and a bit of a stick to behold.

Once cut I found myself savouring the pre-draw. The predominate taste was of honey-suckle/pollen if you know what I mean. There was also that familiar taste older sticks have with a subtle dried fruit thing going on.

The draw was a tiny bit tight but this was probably a good thing because I really didn't want to rush this stick.

From the second puff this was a bit special. Three clearly defined flavours that stayed with it to the end coca, vanilla and honey. The clarity of these three were vivid through the first two thirds. I purged it a bit past half way down as it was getting a little rough. It cleaned right up and carried on delivering. The body built and the flavours got more muted through the last third but never harsh and I enjoyed every puff.

Overall a great stick, the first half was magical and provided an excellent 2 hours.

Nice Review Monkey. That's sounded like one hell of a great tasting stick .... sadly now however ... extinct!

I must say, from your pics the wrapper looked very oily and in great condition considering the vintage ... any plume?
If you want to, you can.

No plume and didn't taste like anything I have had before.

Interesting review Monkey, glad you had the gumption to spark it up. Sometimes these rare cigars are kept for ever waitingf for some mythical perfect moment/ celibration worthy to clip it. Sure the cigar made the day special enough for you.
I might be wrong but I think C.A. has something similar, did you every fire yours up Mate?

Got to fire them up in my book Simon . It was unlikely it needed any more age and I just needed a time-slot when I could do it justice.

Never, they were a Diplomatic release, this means they were not sold but given by the Cuban govt as gifts for other govts and dignitaries (there have been several, usually with the palm-tree second band). I have not seen any apart form the KoS who have their own band design (of course this doesn't mean they don't exist).

Some do pop up with some of the specialist retailers from time to time but because of the rarity/exclusivity they are not cheap.

Ajay has probably the largest range of any retailer I have seen (although most are showing 'not in stock'). However if you are really keen I'm sure a call to Ajay would reveal if there are any available.

Hava Havana is a specialist cigar store in London, home to rare and vintage cigars. We also stock cuban cigars, accessories, humidors plus chocolates & gifts. The latest cigar to come out is the La Gloria Cubana Británicas UK Regional 2017.

Lets call it a Trinidad then since an Edmundo Dante's is "Considered" a Monte on this forum.

What offends you with stating similarities in blend/taste?

good review monkey, seeing you smoke it, could see how much you enjoyed it right down to the nub!

In this thread, nothing. Was an off hand remark about something else.

You can call it what you like but Trinidad never released this stick and having smoked it I can now say it tastes different to any of the Fundi's I have smoked (including the '98 gold bands). Personally I would not describe it as a Trinidad (but then I don't discribe the Dante's as Monte's either ....now I am really confused )

Looking back at the pics my second shot was half way down the smoke ...this shows just how much I was savouring each puff of the first half of the smoke.

Joe - it tasted all the better for the company it was smoked with
