  • Short Winter Smoke ? 9

    Cigar: Punch Petit Punch
    Size: 4 ins x 40 ? Perla
    Smoke time: 40 mins

    Cigar age: Unknown. Source http://www.cgarsltd.co.uk

Note: I expected some pepper from this cigar but experienced none, which makes me think Mitch?s ?picking? box for Petit Punch may have a few years age on it. Nor did I experience any of the ?heating up? towards the end normally associated with short-length ?greener? stogies.

Appearance: Stout, bumpy barrel with a clean, oily, reddy-brown oily colorado wrapper carrying just a few veins.

Construction: Neat triple caps. The cigar felt well packed with just the right amount of ?pinch? where the band should have been. (I felt it was a little to low on the barrel). Pre-draw was light and easy and the smoking-draw as easy as any cigar I have ever smoked. The burn was straight throughout, and ash steady and compact. (see pics). Two tap-offs. No re-lights or corrections.

Flavour: My first impression on light up was salt, quickly followed a peat smooth, version of the usual Cuban lemon twang which started on the lips and swirled deliciously around the back of the mouth. The smoke develops in a creamy fashion adding honey, nuts, earth and a light woody edge as the lemonlike sweetness retreats but stays as a constant back note. Progression is subtle, and it?s only when I reached the second half I noticed that everything had deepened and become stronger with smooth earthiness predominant untill around the band this was superseded by a rich chocolatey flavour which ? adult and not oversweet ? had me feeling I was smoking a chocolate mousse. Delicious.

Overall: This cigar didn?t smoke ... it floated. The strength and quality of flavour are excellent. Tobacco strength I would put at medium. If I have any issue, it?s that it?s too short, I could have happily smoked along with this little Punch all afternoon.

I love these myself. They were the first CC I really 'understood' and as such they forever have a place in my heart.
When I first started smoking them I would get coffee and honey notes but I don't why, now when I smoke them I find them more like Christmas pudding (rich dried fruit flavours). It's not an age thing as these have all been different ages. Perhaps familiarity lets me notice other subtleties?
