H.Upmann Coronas Junior TUBOS
Size: 105mm x 36 ? Cadete
Smoke time: 45mins.
Cigar box date: Unknown. Bought this morning from Waitrose Supermarket.
Note: I don?t usually smoke these on the day of purchase, but pinching along the barrel it didn?t feel too solid or dry, so I decided to give it the flame.
Appearance: Mid brown Colorado/Claro coloured wrapper with one or two faint green patches. The surface is quite rough with a few raised veins. The cigar is presented in the regular H.Upmann cream with orange cap, cedar lined tube.
Construction: Nice, slightly resistive pre-draw. Smooth smoking draw. Reasonably constant burn falling a little to the right towards the end of the smoke. The ash stayed firm for the entire course and was typical Cuban mid grey.
Flavour: Not much in the way of pre-light aroma, just lightly pleasant tobacco. The smoke starts not quite in the normal Cuban way, but on salt and honey cocao, which in some odd way reminded me of Sugar Puffs cereal from my childhood. The Cuban twang when it arrives a few puffs later is more lime like than lemon and gives the smoke a delicious sweet and sour quality. This becomes the base flavour throughout the smoke ? which is linear and refreshing ? and diminishes by degree, but never disappears. At one third the tastes of light vegetal wood and coffee began to creep into the flavour base and I was also able to ?catch? an occasional whiff of sweet peppers. During the second the flavours mixed and gathered in strength in readyness for the final third when the richer and deeper chocolates tones began to appear. Then, WTF, for one puff, and one puff only, something almost liqueur-like, but I couldn?t get it back. Over the last inch the smoke is full on chocolate which did get darkly bitter, but not unpleasant towards the end.
Overall: Very good. Delicious. I have had draw issues with this cigar in the past, but this afternoon I got lucky and this little tubos far exceeded my expectation. Grand wee smoke, I would certainly recommend grabbing a few before Spring.
