  • Short Winter Smoke ? 6

    H.Upmann Coronas Junior TUBOS
    Size: 105mm x 36 ? Cadete
    Smoke time: 45mins.

Cigar box date: Unknown. Bought this morning from Waitrose Supermarket.

Note: I don?t usually smoke these on the day of purchase, but pinching along the barrel it didn?t feel too solid or dry, so I decided to give it the flame.

Appearance: Mid brown Colorado/Claro coloured wrapper with one or two faint green patches. The surface is quite rough with a few raised veins. The cigar is presented in the regular H.Upmann cream with orange cap, cedar lined tube.

Construction: Nice, slightly resistive pre-draw. Smooth smoking draw. Reasonably constant burn falling a little to the right towards the end of the smoke. The ash stayed firm for the entire course and was typical Cuban mid grey.

Flavour: Not much in the way of pre-light aroma, just lightly pleasant tobacco. The smoke starts not quite in the normal Cuban way, but on salt and honey cocao, which in some odd way reminded me of Sugar Puffs cereal from my childhood. The Cuban twang when it arrives a few puffs later is more lime like than lemon and gives the smoke a delicious sweet and sour quality. This becomes the base flavour throughout the smoke ? which is linear and refreshing ? and diminishes by degree, but never disappears. At one third the tastes of light vegetal wood and coffee began to creep into the flavour base and I was also able to ?catch? an occasional whiff of sweet peppers. During the second the flavours mixed and gathered in strength in readyness for the final third when the richer and deeper chocolates tones began to appear. Then, WTF, for one puff, and one puff only, something almost liqueur-like, but I couldn?t get it back. Over the last inch the smoke is full on chocolate which did get darkly bitter, but not unpleasant towards the end.

Overall: Very good. Delicious. I have had draw issues with this cigar in the past, but this afternoon I got lucky and this little tubos far exceeded my expectation. Grand wee smoke, I would certainly recommend grabbing a few before Spring.

Great review Tip, and can I say - brave of you to buy and smoke a cigar from a supermarket...

Not something I have ever done..

These aren't too bad a purchase, my local Asda's stock these along with the RyJ Petit Coronation. Can't go wrong for something to smoke when you don't have anything in your humidor.

I have bought Tubos from Waitrose before, and if they 'feel' OK smoke them on the way back on my walks. If they feel dry .... I humi 'em back to health.

I think my Waitrose does a good turnaround on Cuban Tubos, so they're generally pretty fresh.

TBH tho, I bet our Store does a rubbish turn over and I get a cigar that has been on the shelf for months

            Very interesting read.

I smoked a non-Tubos version yesterday and it had the tight draw you've mentioned. There was only a slight hint of complexity in the second third, which was pleasent but just never seemed to materialise enough.

But upon reading your review I should really retract my thoughts and give the wee fella a second chance.

Thanks for the review, great work.

If like most of us your smoking outside, that might be something to do with your smoking rhythm. I find I really have to discipline into not hurrying, for wanting to get out of the cold.

And, you've also opened another question Goose. On the CGars site, H.Upmann Coronas Junior Untubed are billed as formally Petit Upmann (Of JFK fame and highly rated at 8.5 at http://www.cigars-reviews.org ) The H.Upmann Junior Coronas (Tubed) are not so billed, yet the product descriptions are the same. It may be a typo, as usually I would expect the same blend for both the boxed and tubos version of any vitola?

Very good point, although a dam sight warmer than it has been, I still think my smoking time was cut down a good 7-8mins because of the cold.

Interesting as I would also expect to see the same blends. Surely someone on the forum may have the info on this?

Smoked my first one of these at lunchtime today, but the untubed version that I picked up recently from Cgars.

Interesting to read the comments on the tight draw as my one today certainly suffered from that. Pre-cut it felt very tightly packed, only yeilding to a very firm squeeze along the length of the cigar - none of the springyness I'd prefer... I really hoped that a couple of weeks sat at 69%RH would have helped.

Real pain to keep it on the go, had to re-light 4/5 times... underlying taste was nice (woody/leathery) but ultimately I was left disappointed!

Having delved in the humi again to have a look-see, its 2 remaining siblings feel equally firm. Will more time alone in the dark help them out?

Probably help. Ideally a month or two in the humi to settle is a good guideline.

Interesting... i've also had draw issues with H. Upmann Coronas junior tubos. Thanks for the interesting review.

This was the first i smoked not so long ago. I bought mine from Asda and it had an almost impossible draw, i smoked less than half and gave up on it. Decided i could have just had a bad one and invested in another, turned out to be great, the draw was spot on for me.
