  • Short Winter Smoke ? 3

    Cigar: Tatuaje Havana VI
    Size: 4.5 x 49 ? (Verocu No.9)
    Origin: Nicaragua
    Wrapper/Binder/Filler: Nicaragua
    Smoke time: 1 hour

Cigar age: Unknown. Generously gifted-in as part of a BOTL bomb from Lee Nub.

Note: This is the first time I?ve smoked a Tat, so I?ve no idea how it compares strength or flavourwise with the rest of the Havana VI line or with others within the Tatuaje brand. I picked on this cigar today because it is currently the smallest in my NC?s humi.

Appearance: Powerful looking stick with a rich, dark wrapper nicely offset with double red, white silver dual bands. The size is a little strange being the length of a Cohiba Magicos but with a DC guage, and despite appearing quite ?chunky? is very light in the hand.

Construction: Feeling along the length, the cigar is surprisingly soft by contrast to it?s athletic appearance. The pre-draw felt very (too) light and the smoking draw was similar delivering a massive amount of beautiful ?pale blue? smoke, in fact too much smoke, but I?ll get to that later. The ash was relatively firm if a bit ragged at times and the burn held itself pretty well throughout the smoke.
Two tap-offs, one fall-off. (See pics) No relights or corrections.

Flavour: Pre-light aroma is earthy, while the initial draw gives a salty earthiness with an under taste of citrus. The first third retains the earth and pleasant saltiness and gains a very slight mocha. Half way and the notes of mocha become dominant with the earthiness all but disappeared. There was also an occasional spice, that came and went and gave the smoke a nice edge. In the final third the flavour became ?fuller? and picked up leather notes rising to a raisinlike finish, which while pleasant, was on one or two puffs quite acrid.

Overall: I enjoyed the first half of this cigar very much, the second half not so. The reason I think was due to the sheer amount of smoke the cigar releases. It overwhelmed the confined space of the conservatory to the extent I had to open the door and all the windows. It also overwhelmed me a little, making me feel a bit bilious. But as I say, all due to the physical amount of smoke, the cigar itself was nicely flavoursome and the tobacco strength I would catagorise as being mild in the first half rising to a controllable medium in the second. Next time I?ll know better and go outside from the off.
