Hi forum,
I have just finished smoking a really tasty Cuban which has been greatly enjoyed and has allowed me to realise how Cohiba are still in business. I won't ramble but rather post the review I wrote down while smoking. Oh and please forgive the possible tense crossovers.
Appearance/Structure (15): 13/15:
This Cuban classic looks absolutely beautiful, infact the pictures don't do it any justice. When analyzing the cigar's wrapper you can tell how finely intricate it is and how much effort has been put into producing this beauty. The wrapper is very smooth with no veins, bumps or patches, it is very evenly rolled and this actually shows further on. The triple cap is applied beautifully and if I may add the pre-light aroma is awesome, classic Cuban tobacco, leather, earthiness and a slight hint of cocoa hits my nose. Not to mention the awesome company graphic design.
Smoking characteristics (25):23/25:
The draw on the cigar was just right however at the start the volume of smoke was slightly less than expected , I am quite sure this was due to a large crack just below the cap which occurred during transportation and actually opened up more in the humidor. The cigar stayed quite even when lit and was clearly rolled well, as the ash stayed on for a long while.
Flavour (25): 22/25:
In this department, it is where the Cohiba really shined; I have split this section up in to 3 parts so it is easier to interpret.
1/3: Upon lighting, I was instantly hit with a bomb of delightful flavours, the most obvious was a grassy taste which is supposedly a distinguished signature of the Cohiba tobacco (one of those “ahhhhh, I understand what they meant moments”). Other broad flavours were leather and earthiness, on the more subtle side I could taste a hint of coffee hitting the roof of my mouth. Also toward the mid section of this third I could feel a very slight zing on my lips and back of the mouth. This seemed to be on and off but was definitely noticeable. From this third I felt it was medium-full bodied cigar.
2/3: The grassy Cohiba flavour continues and actually broadens this time as the leather and earth tone down. Cream emerges through now and is so pleasant. The cocoa seems to have crept in again only this time slightly stronger. The spice has totally worn off for a portion of time and then returned yet stronger. The cigar has now become medium bodied.
3/3: Into the final third the cream and grassiness has vastly toned down. The spice becomes quite dominant and the cigar has become slightly bland. This tends to happen with some Cubans and is most noticeable when the cigar is this tasty! After leaving the cigar to rest for a minute, I purged, took a sip of fresh water and it was back to its creaminess. A woody taste then slowly crept in and is rather broad, earth tastes are also much more apparent now. The cigar finished on these dark, smokey tones which tasted like roasted nuts and was a good strong finale.
Overall impression (35): 32/35:
All in all, this Cohiba Robusto was such a pleasant smoking experience for me and the cigar has actually currently made it to my no.2 (after the monte.2). The complexity and mixture of broad and subtle tastes made for such an exciting, yet relaxing cigar which is great for reminiscing past times. I believe this cigar tasted so great to me, as it included everything I look for in a good cigar and didn’t show signs of features I don’t so much look forward to. For the regularly asked question: are we really paying for a great cigar or just the brand name and marketing scheme? Well as you will probably guess I am completely against this statement. I do believe the tobacco used is so high up in quality and the construction is the same. Would I smoke these regularly? No, the cost of these is higher up in range and we get what we pay for, but I don’t think I could afford it, what I would be happy to do is buy a box and leave them to sit in the humidor for special occasions and times when I need to bring the spirits higher.
Final score: 90 points
