Vegas Robaina Famosos
Size: 5ins x 49 ? Robustos
Smoke time: 50mins.
Note: The cigar was bought as a single. (Age unknown.) Also, the Famosos isn't meant to be a relative beginners cigar, so I'm possibly punching a little above my weight with this Review.
Appearance: Typical VR. Excellent presentation oily medium brown almost veinless wrapper. However, this cigar was marred by a small wrapper crack about half-way along the length which had occurred in the humi ? which I mended with Torcedor glue ? and which had prompted me to smoke it this afternoon.
Construction: Simultaneously good and bad. Bad: On cutting the wrapper split above the triple cap which meant I had to keep the tip moist and be constantly wary of it throughout the smoke. The initial burn was poor and went off at a 30? angle, but after about 10mins the burn corrected itself and stayed on-line thereafter. Good: Excellent draw. Very easy and delivering volumes of pleasant, creamy smoke. The ash was compact and firm. No re-lights required.
Flavour: I really liked it, The initial flavor had a dry sweetness about it and tasted really nice, but nicely of what I don?t know. There was also a very light saltiness that contrasted well with the sweeter notes and created a delightful sensation on the back of the teeth and tongue. As the smoke progressed the flavours became deeper and darker with the strength within the cigar also becoming more noticeable. Some pepper was also beginning to appear and for some reason nut kernels sprang to mind along with the thought that a Birra Moretti or a can of Lech might have been a better choice than the Nescafe I was sipping. In the final third the sweetness becomes an undernote, the peppers really pick-up and the predominant taste becomes much, much woodier ? I would have smoked this cigar right to the tip, but unfortunately I?d managed to do a bit more wrapper damage removing the band and so left it.
Overall: Nice Cuban. Certainly one I think worth trying again sometime, although possibly from a box with a bit of confirmed age on it.
