As Pete mentioned earlier we got together on Friday, opened up our travel humi's and decided on a path.
Neither of us had smoked a wide Churchill before and both of us had not smoked a Duke for ages, since we had two of each between us a little comparison seemed in order.
First up the wide Churchill. Both sticks were from different sources/boxes so it was interesting to compare. Both had good construction but felt light for their size. This observation was confirmed with a very light pre-draw, both of us felt too light. When I cut mine I could see 5 veins inside, not what I call good quality control.
I think I speak for both of us as we had very similar experiences. This cigar came on and off throughout. It would have a good cm followed by a bad one. Most of this was down to it simply being under-filled. A decently rolled one would have been a lot better. When it was good it was very nice, R and J profile, creamy smoke. Still very young but a couple of years will sort this out nicely. Overall my experience was far too inconsistent to be enjoyable however a fully filled WC with a couple of years on it would be a very nice smoke. As this experience was shared by both of us from two different boxes it does not bode well. Anyone else care to share their experience on this subject?
Onto the Duke. These had a year or so on them now. This was chalk and cheese. Even though mine was a little tight the quality of the smoke was miles ahead of the WC. Smooth, creamy with a great, subtle R and J profile.
I am in no hurry to smoke another WC (although maybe in a year or two) however I am delighted that I have a few Dukes put down and encourage anyone else to do so while they are still relativity cheap and freely available.
Some may say this isn't a fair comparison but consider that they have nearly the same retail price (Cgars) Duke ?16.99, WC ?14.99. IMHO the Duke will go on to be one of the great EL's for mid term smoking (2-10 years) while the WC is just another (in a long list of) not quite R and J's (a missed opportunity as it appears to be built down to a price

getting wise and buying up the remaining stock before I get a new box myself!
