I did mention this at the time and got a replacement so I paired it with my choice of drink (tea rather than rum) and gave it another go. Judging by your review you was not very impressed. I have not tried these but I have a box of HDMs epicure seleccion in Toro and I really like them. Have you tried these?

Your photos are of the Honduran HDM so will be a completely different flavour profile to any of the Cubans. Would be interesting to see your thoughts on the Hondurans though

I was expecting a mild cigar, but the construction did leave me rather disappointed. I have smoked the HdM Epicure Especial and really enjoyed that, but again it was Cuban. The Honduran cigars that you have will be much richer in flavour. Ironically some of my favourite cigars are Honduran. I will have to see about getting some NC HdM and giving them a smoke 👍🏻

Great review. Would be interested to hear your thoughts after dry-boxing one of these.

I bought x10 of these from Split, Croatia and wasn’t impressed at all with them after leaving them in the humi for a few months. Firm to the touch, a tight dry draw and burn issues.

I took one fishing with me last Friday (in a cedar-lined leather double case) but didn’t smoke it due to the poor weather. On Sunday I retrieved it from my fishing bag and decided to smoke it which was a much more pleasant experience.

Apart from that similar issue in the last third, slight crack that was opening with the heat but used the band to keep it together, I didn't mind the Hoyo. Best experience I've had with one too.

I am surprised at the different flavours you obtained from both sticks. I would expect very similar flavours from the same cigar but you seemed to get quite different.
I never can pick up or at least be able to articulate subtle flavours. Tends to be a general impression or bold flavour which is generally consistent across multiple sticks of the same cigar.
Are the subtle flavours a manifestation of other factors rather than what the smoke from a cigar actually tastes of?
e.g. a hot day in the afternoon after a steak dinner would give the cigar different subtle flavours than if smoked in the cold morning after a cup of tea?

Definitely my palate is a rough instrument compared to others.

I find that drink pairings do make a massive difference. With the first cigar, the beautiful rum that had been packaged with the it overpowered the cigar, almost completely at times. The cup of tea was a lot more suitable.

The circumstances surrounding a cigar can also alter how you experience a cigar. As you say Kickback this can range from the time of day, what you've eaten or drunk in the leadup, the weather and your mood. We all taste cigars in different ways and as much as I hate to bring gender into the conversation, women have been proven to have more taste buds on their tongues than men, ergo have a more sensitive and acute palate. At the end of the day the question has to be did you enjoy the cigar regardless of the specifics of its flavour profile? In my case with this cigar the answer is not really.

I had a Rio Seco in JJ Foxes the week they became available in the UK and it was great. I've had a few since and have enjoyed all of them - but then again HdM are my favourite marca.
