Quite a busy day and I was feeling like indulging in a nice stick; having just an hour or so between work and family duties I had little choice but go for this small Perla (4"x40) from my tiny stash in need of replenishment.
Now, as a newbie, I fill unsure if I should post this or not. It seems quite arrogant to describe a smoke without the experience most of you guys have but maybe it will be a good way to stimulate discussion. The worst that can happen is that someone shows me the error in my ways and that's fine by me if it happens. Always happy to learn from the masters!
Let's get back to business.
I've taken the template Simon uses for his reviews because it's the one that seems most logic to me with my limited experience.
Appearance/Construction /15
The Petit Princess has a nice oily colorado claro wrapper, unfortunately the one I had showed two rather unsightly vein running about halfway down both on the front and back, slightly green, which spoiled the otherwise smooth wrapper (tried to give an idea in one of the pics). Beginner's bad luck? The cigar had quite a quite clear boxed appearance and felt quite firm. 11
Smoke/Draw /25
Nothing bad to say. Nice draw, firm ash which dropped passing from one third to the next. Although the amount of smoke this small cigar produces is not huge, it was nice and velvety and it took a pleasant 45-50 minutes to smoke. 22
Flavour /25
This didn't start in the best of ways, initially it was almost bland with just a hint of sweet spice, but rapidly became quite tannic, leaving my mouth completely dry . There were still a few pleasant toasty and leathery aromas popping up occasionally, but again hard to appreciate in the context. Moving into the second third things got a lot better; the flavour became a lot smoother with some sweet caramel plus green and almost floral notes appearing slowly developing into more earthy and spicy tones going into the final part. This was less impressive maybe, but quite pleasant with some floral and dark chocolate showing up. The tannic, mouth drying feeling re-appeared but a lot mellower then before, actually quite pleasant in the whole. 21
Overall Impression /35
I have to admit that I had read plenty of good reviews for the RJ Petit Princess and was really looking forward to give it a try and was maybe expecting too much. Appearance aside, the only thing that really let this down to me was the first part of the cigar, which was not very interesting nor pleasant. The rest more than made up for it, both the way it diveloped and the time it lasted were quite impressive for my limited experience and I would probably buy a few again. 29
total 83/100
Having said that, as a newbie, this was my first Perla cigar (one of many firsts at the moment!) and possibly it might also be that I liked the vitola over the cigar itself as a quick-ish smoke. I'll probably try a few other cigars in the same size (Monte and Diplomaticos no.5, Siglo I, Petit Punch before they go).
Looking forward to the No.5 review Simon, even if it seems you didn't like it too much.
