Alec Bradley MAXX - The Ego
50 Gauge, 9" Length
I designated this for my sunday smoke, having nothing planned for the day, I was hoping it would soak up a couple of hours. And it did! and then some!
Yes, at 9" it's taking up the whole ashtray
A nice sunny day and a glass of wine, I settled down and lit up this 50 gauger. I've never tried Alec Bradley before so this is quite the introduction to that line.
Lighting was no problem at all, after mastering a nice technique in the past couple of weeks, I got this (thing) going after a couple of minutes no problem. Right on the off I was getting easy draw and pleasant white/blue smoke in the bright sunny day, with a glass of reasonable wine, this was the begginning of something remarkable.
Being a Gamer I was reading the September issue of PCgamer while enjoying this stick. Flavors in the first...inch?! were very subtle, that slight beery taste, but nothing too remarkable. I had enough of the bleeding thing I wasnt too worried about a slow start. I was smoking this outside and typically, the sun went in and the wind picked up, which gave me some maintenance issues, light-volume smoke and slightly uneven burn.
I retreated down to my workshop to enjoy a wind-free environment and the enjoyment factor rose. After the first tier of ash fell, I was pleased to see very minor coning, which was surprising , seeing as I was smoking outside in the moderate wind which made the wrapper burn slightly un-even, but managed to fix it with some warming from my lighter. Flavors were picking up and the smoke was lovely.
The cigar went through stages of smoking beautifully to not doing much, I'd guess it was due to how it was constructed, and the sheer length of it, it didnt really matter. Id have 20 minutes of near-perfection, and 20 minutes of so so burn. As I said before, with some assistance from the lighter it errected it fine every so often, but I didnt really have to 'work' to keep things going, Its only me being pedantic.
About half way down things were certainly more flavorsome, If im being honest, Ive forgotten what types of flavors there were, I recall there being some nice cream tones past half way. It really was a mix of everything.
The actual experience of this cigar is superior to the actual smoke (if that makes sense). I went through many flavors, simply savoring the experience and reflecting on things during the duration of the smoke was great. I'd say this is a great test of endurance, but a cigar to me is not about any endurance, I always smoke my cigars right down to an inch or less simply because I love the motion of it. Today I had 9 inches of tobacco to get through, and I enjoyed the first inch to the last, did I 'get bored'? Of course I didnt.
This is a 50 gauge cigar remember.
Burn time was 3 Hours, 20 minutes
People always ask do you get bored, or, oh that's too much to smoke. This cigar is a true test to see if you love cigars that much to enjoy +3 hours worth of cigar time. I certainly did. I've had a great sunday, everythings gone right, and most of that time was smoking this. If you want to shave off a few hours , or youve not got nothing planned. Get a book, get outside when the weathers nice and light this bad boy up, when you see it in person , it's a sight to behold.
I'll remember this cigar for a long time, not only because it was a nice smoke, but simply because of the experience. I dont think i'll be topping it for a while.
8/10: Great experience, great high, nice smoke, construction that sorts out uneven burn, cooperative wrapper,a whole host of different flavors in this cigars huge length.A real balanced smoke considering the size. Try one, you wont forget it!
