  • Oliva Serie G Cameroon

    Hello folks.

I 'found' those little sticks while browsing Gauntley's online store. After reading the description

The Serie G Maduro is a medium-bodied blend made with African Cameroon wrappers. The unique flavour notes of this wrapper are complimented by the natural richness of Nicaraguan Habano fillers. Medium strength with cedar and coffee notes. The Cameroon wrapper will allow this cigar to develop with age.
I was eager to try them - that sounds like a nice cigar. So I jumped on my bike and with Mrs rode to said shop. To my great dissappointment I was informed that last tin was sold just few minutes before our arrival . Ordered them from my smoking shop (very good service again!) with few other bits and tried one as soon as they arrived. Was getting ready to review it that day, but had a glass of Kraken and couldn't really feel any taste of it - I thought that I just chose wrong drink.

So tonight I had it with cup of black coffee. Results I got are somewhat unexpected, but we'll get there soon.

    Some dry details first

    Ring Gauge : 38
    Length : 4
    Rolled In : Nicaragua
    Filler : Nicaragua
    Binder : Nicaragua
    Wrapper : Cameroon

    Construction and looks

Cigar was quite uneven - few hard spots, few soft spots... I guess it could be expected from hand made stick. Nice and slightly oily wrapper was peeling off in few places - not much, but noticed. Draw was nice and easy, smell was not bad, but kind of boring - not what I expected. Just totally plain tobacco, without any fireworks to it.

I lit it up with pictured match and finally started to relax after work. First few puffs delivered absolutely nothing - just plain taste of (not bad, but not highest quality) tobacco. Smoke output was quite good given size of the cigar, smell was nice, not harsh, not stinky, I'd say it was actually quite pleasant. With mixed feelings I got to second third.

As you can see, burn wasn't really perfect, but wouldn't say it was bad either. Ash stayed on nicely and was falling off in solid, big chunks.

Tasting notes finally started to change a bit. Got few tiny hints of earth and leather, but it was somewhat faded, distant. When I got past half of the stick some spices came into play and gave nice and fresh feel. Last third brought some (very little) woodiness and more spice. Good point - there was no harshness at all.

As I took my time, it lasted about 30-35 minutes. Now I must say - I really appreciate all work that some skilled craftsman put into rolling my cigars, but this particular one was nothing special. Maybe I expected too much (marketing worked ), but i could point out lack of character.

    Final thoughts

I think my dissappointment might be a result of too high expectations. After all, it's just cheap stick, but since questions about some short/cheap smokes are quite common from what I noticed, thought it might be useful for folks looking for some new interesting cigars.

This one interesting certainly is not. It's not bad, I would smoke some more, I would recommend at least one to try, but with little more relaxed approach. I don't think time spent with little Oliva was wasted, but JLP Petit Cazadores could make this time better.

    Cheers
    Tom

    Just a quick update.

Had another one yesterday and must say it was not the same stick. Smell before i lit it was much stronger, pleasant and aromas were much more vivid. If I had picked this one for the review, it would look completely different and certainly I would consider getting some more.

I'm surprised how inconsistent cigars from the same tin can be.

Still a great review Tom. It just shows that reviews are the opinion of one person, about one smoke.
So even if the review puts down a smoke, it does not necessarily mean it is a bad smoke for everyone.

That's what I enjoy most about this 'hobby'. The cigars we smoke are hand made, there will always be variation. It's that variation that keeps the smoking interesting!

I'd agree, but when two taste like they were pepper dry and then remoisturised and another is good, well, it's not that kind of variation I am looking for...

I only had a Serie G once ages ago and it didn't compare to the Serie V. So I never bothered with it again. Maybe I just had a bad one...

Wow! This is an amazing and thourough review of a cigar. Obviously, you put a lot of time and thought into this review. Well done, Tom Major! I found it very helpful. Perhaps you should be writing for a major publication, like Cigar Journal or UK Cigar Scene!

I think this is important information, especially for a newbie like me.

My takeaway - Don't judge cigar brands/types on a single cigar. Try two or more before you decide.

I like the Serie V tubos... the rest is not the quality-price I was expecting, not even those MELANIOS ...

Haha! Perhaps, Tom Major. But it's all relative, and from my newbie point of view, warranted.
