  • Trinidad Coloniales

Hope all is well with everyone, I thought I'd write this review as I haven't seen too many reviews of this nice stick and I haven't written a review in about 6 months - entirely down to the fact that I found that over the winter months cigars don't taste anywhere near as good as they do in the summer (I can only smoke outside unfortunately). But now the warmer - and hopefully sunnier - weather is with us I've got back into smoking my beloved puros.
    Hope you enjoy the review!

The Trinidad Coloniales is an odd sized vitola but it's a size that I do love, it feels nice in the hand if you're looking for a good 45 minute smoke. This example was probably the best cigar I've ever had looks-wise, there's an absolutely beautiful silky tooth to the wrapper and an amazing honey aroma to it, honestly smelt of pure honey; on looks and smell alone this must get 10/10!

Cutting using a guillotine cutter the cigar yields quite an easy draw but this is something I don't mind as you can regulate the flow. I always think it's better to have a easier draw compared to one that's unbearably tight - the latter being something that I have found a number of times with Cuban cigars.

Upon lighting the first few puffs give a real sweet creamy, nutty flavour. Real notes of nuts like I'm eating hazelnut brittle and as it develops a lovely subtle spice tingle comes through, not harsh at all just keeping you alert to the flavours coming through.

Moving into the second third this stick builds on the previous nut flavour with a pleasant leather taste; nice marshmallow textured smoke too. The spice increases and combined with the background sweetness an interesting jalape?o flavour can be noticed. I'm hooked by this point.

Entering the final third and the cigar builds again and pushes on into an damp oaky flavour but once again with that sweet backdrop. The spice builds and spadefuls of earth are hurled at my tastebuds, occasionally giving way to that initial sweet nut flavour almost like a break in the clouds. It's a real complex smoke and there's more to it than it looks.

The burn throughout was almost razor sharp and didn't need any touch ups. I was very pleased that the Trinidad brand has lived up to its name again with this medium sized and medium to full bodied stick.
Great, complex flavours with no major complaints to the construction. I would certainly buy this one again and I can't wait to smoke my Fundadores that has been aging in my humidor for about a year now.

I would give the Trinidad Coloniales 93 points out of 100.

    Thanks for reading!
    Matt

Excellent review can agree with oyur findings & score. Sure you'll love the Fundy even more MAtt, it you enjoy slimmer vitolas. The old fashioned God Bands are even better but have a few moderns ones first before you try one of those so you can appreciate the difference.

Stellar Palate as always, have you ever thought of doing extended reviews for a magazine?

Thanks Simon and Marc, appreciate the comments
I'll certainly try a few more Trini's for definite! Nice quality sticks; I'm looking forward to the new Topez that'll probs be out in a few decades time haha

Funny you should mention that Marc as I have only just contacted a certain UK cigar magazine yesterday asking whether I could write reviews for them. I'm still waiting a response although I'm not holding my breath, I'd certainly love to write reviews even it's for free!

Very nice review! I tend to find quite grassy and citrusy flavors in the Coloniales, surprised to see your didn't find these flavors in yours.

                    Trinidad Coloniales

Thanks guys I suppose there was a touch of that grassy quality in it but the main impression I got from this was nuts, spice and sweet wood. Perhaps aged for a while longer the grass/citrus flavours would come through

Could be, or perhaps just different years and some flavor variations. All my Coloniales are from '14. Either way, very nice review.

Just today I received delivery of the Coloniales. Inspired by the posts on Topes, bug as these were half the price, thought I'd give it a go. Great to read the review Matt. As a newbie to the hobby, it gives me a chance to compare flavour profiles. I'll let you know how I get on.... at the weekend hopefully.

I've never had the Coloniales, but the Trinidad flavour profiles are lovely...Reyes and the Robusto T are two of my favs.
