As a result of further reading whilst enjoying another NC I ordered the Diamond Crown Robusto.
Just the correct size for an hour of peace in the garden, the cigar appeared well presented with a clean and neat cap, a smooth darkish caramel wrapper and a neat, not too packed, foot. Firing the stick up it lit quickly and immediately presented large wafts of light tobacco aromas with a hint of light pipe smoke. Absolutely no harsh pepper or heat which was a pleasant surprise although the NC Nicaraguans I have been trying have been kind on the palate. When lit and a couple of draws made, a sharp purge through brought lighter, floral Joya Red aromas which were wistful amongst the still billowing smoke from this keenly burning stick. The cap cut clean even with my ?poor-house? single plastic guillotine cutter. Cap remained dry and didn?t sog like a towel hanging out in the rain such as I have had with other NCs. Foot burned brightly deep within with no heat at all at the cap and it was an idle pleasure watching the burn from end on??tiger tiger burning bright??
The cigar continued with no corrections into the second third and with an even burn. Reflecting the constant burn the ash was light grey with streaks of darker silver which I expected to shard but didn't, it held fast and happily continued to burn away slowly without me needing to encourage it or draw. Something from this NC that I would expect from my (admittedly few) Cubans. Into the second there were light leather and wood aromas, then a cleaner tobacco ?traditional? aroma but without that harshness expected of a machine made. Certainly not the mellow or flavoursome qualities of Cubans but equally enjoyable as a Padron 2000 that I enjoyed a few weeks back on holiday. The mild taste, rich smoke generation and cool draw made this an enjoyable cigar, perhaps for day time as there just aren?t enough deep notes for an evening of seriousness.
Last third with a clean purge gave a ?fireside hearth? aroma with slight coal burning then lighter old leather/ coffee aroma. Still no heat at the cap. I don?t tend to draw deep so perhaps I?m not generating the burn at my mouth but I know this was an inoffensive and pleasing smoke with a decent quality of construction and price point. I will buy again.
