  • Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story

Hi guys, just had one of these New World sticks and thought I'd pop up a quick review of it:

The pre-light aroma is not strong but there is a mild sweetness from the wrapper. The seams are very tight and the construction looks great for a little Perfecto like this. The wrapper is a dull earthy colour but the band certainly attracts your attention away from that; large and bright, a nice little keeper for old-time sake. The dimensions are approximately 4" length with an average of about a 45 ring gauge due to the taper.

The "nipple" of the cigar lit perfectly and within a few puffs there was a very good amount of smoke being produced. Initial flavours were a beautiful sweetness with a slight woodiness to it, great beginning! Unfortunately as the filler came into play more (due the tapered ring gauge) the flavours became less sweet and more peppery; which is not the profile that I enjoy much. However there were still hints of sweetness into the first third.

Moving into the second third, the sweetness has pretty much died and I'm just getting a peppery wood taste. No spice, just pepper - like a black pepper taste; it's not overpowering but it's certainly the dominant flavour. I must say the construction has been superb so far, the burn line is as straight and even as any cigar I've had, so I must praise Fuente on their ability to roll these Perfectos, it is excellent in terms of construction.

The final third picks up in spice slightly with the black pepper taste still remaining at the forefront of the flavour profile. Hints of the previous sweetness along with a coffee taste come and go but aren't there long which is a shame (for me at least). I did detect a new flavour for my palette which was an almost shellfish saltiness; it was there for two puffs at the most but it was certainly salty in flavour.

Overall this stick performed very well and lasted a good 30 minutes with no nicotine kick at all. The construction was superb but for me the flavours weren't the sort of flavours I enjoy in a cigar. If you are looking for a cigar that's peppery but not spicy, with some sweetness and won't take up a lot of your time then this cigar is for you, but otherwise it's just a very well constructed Perfecto with a fancy band. Don't get me wrong it is a very good cigar but it's just that it didn't deliver the flavours I enjoy. It's a shame the initial flavours from the first few draws didn't last throughout the cigar but oh well it was a relaxing 30 minutes at least.

Finally, is it worth the money? This stick cost me ?10 from CGars and for the smoking time I got from it, coupled with the peppery flavours which aren't my bag, I would say no unfortunately.

I would give this cigar a rating of 3.5 out of 5. The construction is one thing that this cigar really does well but for complexity it loses marks.

Hope you enjoyed my review and I look forward to hearing if any of you have different experiences with the Fuente brand.

    Happy smoking,
    Matt

Great, thorough review Matt. I really love these cigars but that's what makes cigars so great, everyone's experience is different.

I love these little sticks with a coffee. I've got a couple sitting in my humidor waiting for an opportunity to smoke one with a buddy of mine but we keep getting rained off.

Thanks for an excellent review Matt. Really got a feel for your experience - some good pics too! I have to say that I'm a big fan of these cigars, but they're on strict rationing (for the reason of price/value you bring up at the end of your review...) You're spot on about the construction, perfect draw and burn every time!

Not a fan of these for the reasons you described so good review Had to wonder about that little hint of seafood saltiness though, where had that roller's hand been?

                        Great review.
I personally much preferred the maduro short story. Had one of those?

Thanks for the many positive feedback comments guys, appreciate it
I do indeed wonder what the roller had been eating at the time, maybe some langoustine pasta or something, haha
I felt that this cigar had more to give, it was as if there was a peak in flavour that never arrived. I wonder if some more time in the humidor would bring out the best in these sticks?
and no I haven't tried the maduro version Mark, though I bet it's full of flavour as I usually find that maduros give me the coffee flavour I am looking for
                          Cheers,
                          Matt
