  • H. Upmann Half Corona Review

First off I should say I have no experience of the Upmann brand (being fairly new to this game) but having just smoked one of these cigars I felt it was good enough for a review, so here goes...

The pre-light aroma of this cigar is not very strong but there is a slight sweetness to it, lovely deep brown wrapper; firm but with just enough give. Pre-draw was a slight spice with a nutty background but overall nice sweet tobacco taste.

This little half corona lit perfectly I must say, the amount of smoke being produced right off the bat was neither too much or too little. The initial flavour of the first third was lovely, on the draw there was a little sweetness, mild pepper spice but the spice quickly dies on the finish, and a nut background is also there. I was very pleased to see that after a few draws a milky coffee flavour comes through. A great start and first half!

Into the second half (this cigar is too small to do in thirds), the coffee flavours have almost died away but the nutty background still remains. A tiny amount of chocolate plays off the dying coffee flavours but it's very mild and was only present for a few draws. The construction has been absolutely spot on, the burn has been even all through the cigar so far and the ash fell off in a nice 1.5 inch chunk.
The finish on this cigar is not long and really dig that, it's a short smoke and I don't want any tobacco, nut, coffee tastes staying on the palate for the rest of the day. This cigar is designed to fill a short gap in your day and I find it good that the tastes aren't keeping you thinking about your next cigar all the time, particularly if you've got a long day ahead.

Towards the end of the cigar the sweet nutty flavours have gone and the spice picks up. The finish is much longer than before but it still doesn't linger, by now the finish is perfect. The complexity has decreased but it remains a very enjoyable smoke. Throughout this has been a solid medium bodied stick with only mild strength.

All-in-all a brilliant little smoke, lasting approximately 45 minutes which is much longer than I expected. I nubbed this one fully, in fact I nubbed it that much that it burnt my thumb causing me to drop it on the floor, but did I stop at that? Certainly not! I picked it up and gave it one final big draw and let the cigar die with dignity, not by me dropping it by accident.

My only criticism is that I'd like the coffee flavours and the complexity to last longer into the cigar, but apart from that it was brilliant; no dizziness, no headaches or anything associated with nicotine and in my opinion that is great.

If I was rating this as a small, short smoke (not competing it with anything bigger than 100mm length as it's unfair) then I'd have to give this a 4.5 out 5. At roughly ?7-?8 a cigar this is worth a try for definite. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

    Thanks,
    Matt

Great review buddy. I used to like these, I think it was because it was at the lower end of the 'UK price list' of cubans. However, I got a bit bored with the overall experience of these as I expanded and tasted other cigars. Picking up authentic smokes abroad, cheaper, one soon realises how over priced cigars are in the UK. Great review though buddy, thanks for sharing, and feel free to post a few more reviews!

Good review Matt and I must admit that I rather enjoy these, not particularly complex but full of good flavour and just what you need for a short lunchtime smoke. Look forward to your next review!

From memory your review was better than the cigar!

            Cheers guys!

Ha, the review must have taken almost as long to write & post as the cigar took to smoke! All the same spot on from my own recollection but is the UK price really?8! I wouldn't pay that personally, wait until a holiday to Europe & buy for E4-5.

Must admit though that my new favourite shorter smoke is the Montecristo Media Corona which I had at the H&F party last Friday [emoji106][emoji2]

                            Thanks Oskihen
and oh right I'll have to try and get my hands on one when they come out, was it creamy/sweet? or more aromatic/spicy?

More aromatic/spice but very smooth & quite punchy with no hanging about, straight to the flavour.
