  • Cigar Review - Montecristo Open Regatta

    MC Open Regata
I have started making notes when I smoke a stick I want to review - and I will just copy and paste them in here. If it doesn't read well Let me know and il try a more "prose-d" approach.....

Had heard mixed reviews. Picked up for just a fiver in the local B&M.

    Flavour: Medium to Full
    Length: 5 3/8" (135mm)
    Ring Gauge: 46 ring gauge

Paired it with light Italian coffee.

Pre burn draw was sweet with honey, liquorice, leather.

Lit with cedar strip, was a bit of a struggle.
Super easy draw, gallons of smoke. .

Leather, wood, slight farmyardy must. Citrus and spice on the retro hale, some pepperyness.

A little dry on the throat. Not creamy in any way but definately not unpleasant. An easy smoke, very liquid.

Very wragged burn throughout, gave up retouching it. Put this down to it being quite windy outside today.

Mid way still woody - perhaps sandalwood - leather and increasingly floral and spiced. The bouquet is very perfumed and almost Christmassy! Would go well with a blonde beer, or even a glass of fizz!

Continues in the same vein in to the final 1/3.
Mild but very pleasant. Perfumed almost. Some mild pepper.
Held ash past 2", it's wragged burn slowly coming under it's own control. Fantastic construction, great draw.
Something else I like is the actual taste of the stick itself on my lips. Sweet, woody. Some coffee. Very nice.

This smoke is very demure. Pleasant. Not in the slightest over powering. Lovely hits of specific flavours, with a continuous undertone of woodiness and must, leather, orange and cloves. Again very festive. Other than the pre-light, very little actual sweetness, but great mild spices.

I love the shape of the figurado, and the way it concentrates the draw. The way it holds in the mouth is great, very relaxed and comfortable.
Cool smoke throughout, excellent construction, no wavering from quality all the way through.

Definitely not medium-full, more a milder medium - but an excellent smoke all round. Lasted 45 mins or so. Nice after taste, a buttered toast. As a non smoker other than 2-3 cigars a week it did leave me with a bit of a heady rush.

At ?5 I will be buying all they have in stock!

Great review and photos. Wish they had them in my local B&M for a fiver, I dare say I'd be buying the lot too!

How would you rate it against the MonteCristo no 2?

This was the first monte I've ever had. Read reviews that it compares well against the no.2, but is very different.
it was a quality stick and I like it a lot.

Has anyone else tried them? How do my thoughts hold up against those of more experienced cigar smokers?

                    Very nice review!

I was actually offered one of these cigars by a LCDH owner when I was last in Havana, and I have to say I wasn't a fan. Granted, I liked it more then the Open Junior, which had a terrible draw for me, but I still wasn't impressed by it, specially not in comparison to MCs regular No 2. Still, ?5 is decent value for it.

I did like it a lot, but I haven't got a huge frame if reference yet. I think il grab a couple more and come back to it next year....

I've had the Open Regatta a long time ago, remember it being nice but unexciting. Definitely on the milder side of medium as you say. Mind at a fiver yeah I'd give that a go.

I think that's a fair comment - however being such a noob as I am they are all exciting at the moment!

I am of the same opinion. I have enjoyed almost all of my smokes so far.
No doubt I will change my opinion on some of them if I revisit.
There are only three or four so far though, that I would absolutely consider box purchases.

                              Isn't this journey fantastic........
