How do YOU rate cigars

Keep it simple!

I simply make a note of whether I would want to buy it again - no, maybe, yes, box worthy

Like chico Peesinhisjay, I try to keep my ratings simple and informal. As I'm smoking a fine puro or NC stick, I ask myself:. "Do I like this? Enough to buy again? Enough to buy a box? Three simple closed questions which require a Yes or No answer. I find it hard to kid myself with this method...and I think you will, too!


On the other hand, I find you can get lost in a overly complicated rating system and easily fool yourself into "liking" a puro or stick that you actually don't. For example, under the complicated system, a review of a cigar might look like this: "Well it tasted like a turd bird, but it had a nice oily wrapper, easy to light, construction was good, it burned well and price was right. I give it a 89-91."

But under the simple Yes-No system, the same review might look like this: "Well, it tastes like a turd bird....so NO, I will not buy again." Simple, clean, nothing to write down and total up. FOOL PROOF, if you ask me.


But what the Hell do I know? After all, I'm a simple, but humble mexicant preparing to burn from within and navigate the dark sea of awareness.

I review the cosmetics but don't mark them. Taste, smoke delivery and how I feel about the smoking experience on the day are all that matter.

I don't 'review' in a points fashion, not least because I'm still at the, do I like it, is it worth what I paid for it, stage. Not only that but tastes change and one stick may suit better for a given situation/period in time and its difficult to get that across in a numerical fashion.

As an Engineer i take a completely different approach to numbers and go along the yes/no/maybe/love route but try to keep in mind a note of the overall characteristic in terms of flavour whether it evokes chocolate or spice as a dominant flavour. One other factor is the time of day and situation I would enjoy it in, for example a very mild creamy short smoke would be an early in the day affair for me personally, where as a nice full long smoke would be great for the evening. One last aspect is the price, I wouldn't smoke an expensive cigar on a regular basis, so an occasion would be in order and the less likely to smoke on a daily basis probably equates to a lower rating.

That being said... I've got a strong mathematical review for women in terms of pints but thats a story for another day!

I've always wanted to switch to the -10 - +10 system.
-10 being the most heinous, vile cigar I've ever had whilst +10 being the superb, divine smoke that has ever graced my mucous membranes.

But I've been too lazy to update my system. So I've been using the 0-100 scale. Anything above 95 has to be nubbed by me. Anything above 80 must be one I would buy again or be worth my time to smoke. Anything above 60 must be a cigar I would try to smoke again or return. Above 40 would be something I would maybe touch in a blue moon or have a specific charm to not give it a rating that's under 40.

Uhhhhhh..... Can't remember ever wanting to do that. I have mentioned that I know someone who does. We grill him for doing so. Perhaps because we're a bit jealous of his tolerance, lol.

But Geez. No way in hell would I nub every cigar and still be walking. So, no - I am definitely not that guy
